Hi everyone . I am waiting for the results of my second blood test..the first one read 49 hba1c.

I exercise three times a week and my
BMI is currently 26. Been reading up on this condition and it seems I can manage this without medication? Is this possible?

How many carbs do you consume daily ? Any tips would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

Hi Kim, with an Hba1c of 49 you just squeaked into the full diabetic range. At that number i would expect a fairly modest reduction in Carbs will do the trick for you.
Try and avoid as much as possible, Potatoes, bread (Any Colour), Pasta (again any colour), rice (Guess the colour), especially biscuits and cake. I hope you get the idea a Carb is a Carb however it's camouflaged. Also avoid vegetable oils, (they're evil really)
I myself eat no more than 50g carbs a day, frequently much less. With your number and bmi you shouldn't need to go that far, obviously unless you want to.
If you decide to go low carb, you ought to be back in normal numbers within 3 months, although there is no guarantee, we're all different. Above all else don't starve yourself, there is no reason to go hungry.
You may even find the next result is lower, and then you'll just be prediabetic, a perfect chance to stave off full blown diabetes. The second test is because at 49 you're borderline and the first one could be wrong by a small margin.
Good luck.

Thanks for the reply . Very helpful .What do you normally eat when you limit your carbs to 50 g?

The three macro nutrients are carbs, protein and fat. We have trouble with carbs so we reduce our intake of those. To avoid hunger, we need to increase one or both of the others. Protein will still raise our blood sugars a bit but fats, healthy fats are our best choice because they have almost no effect on the blood sugar. By healthy fats, I mean fats that don’t need to be heavily processed. So butter is good, margarine is not. Olive oil is good, rapeseed oil is not. Fat that comes naturally as part of food is good. Full fat yoghurt is better for us than low fat yoghurt: often low fat versions of products replace the fat with carbs so we find them palatable. Take a look at this link:
Jo’s Nutritional Thingy. Many of us have found it a great, short guide to help get our head around where we find ourselves. You can also get food ideas from Diet Doctor website and the Freshwell Project

Might not seem like it now but you've been fortunate to being picked up on the bottom rung of the diagnostic ladder.
Diet control through low carbing should be transformative for your general health, not just diabetes

I found low carb initially worked for me but now I am seeing my sugars rise again. My numbers are high on wakening at 12. I ate 2 boiled eggs, some 5% fat greek yoghurt with cinammon and had 2 cups of tea with milk and it went up to 13 when I tested 2 hours later. Any advice please? I have read that apple cider vinegar before bed can help with higher sugars in a morning

That's a bit high alright, what meds are you on ?
Has your doctor ever checked your insulin levels ?

Those numbers are high considering you had (by your description) a low carb breakfast. What caused them to be as high as 12 in the first place?
Was it too many carbs at dinner (did you test 2hrs after first bite of dinner)? Or is your Dawn Phenomenon really that aggressive?

I dont know what caused them to be high. Research suggested no carbs in my evening meal and HIIT exercise. Had a 7 2 hours after lunch today so very pleased. I have tweaked my foods slightly too by logging my meals and checking the carbs I am consuming. Its amazing how they add up
