Diabetes/psoriasis/sugar levels normal

My fiance ,61, has had diabetes 2 for many years. He's about 5'7", 150 lbs. He got a Stent in his heart in 2016, & has high BP. He's on a blood thinner & on metformin. He doesn't take insulin. Mid March this yr, he started getting a peeling rash on his palms & soles. It got worse. Dermatologist sd it's Psoriasis & ordered strong topical steroids, & a course of oral steroids & antibiotics. Rash got worse, but now it's looking better, bc of the steroids. He had a non fasting blood test & sugar was normal. So we don't understand why suddenly Psoriasis? Is it bc he's diabetic, tho sugar was normal? What else could cause this out of the blue, if sugar was ok? He has high triglycerides, tho he's on meds. I’m not a doctor & no medical training, but I do suffer with psoriasis, never had it on my hands or feet (mainly elbows) & the above picture doesn’t look like any psoriasis I’ve ever seen, I would make another appointment at the doctors as that looks really painful

Do remember just because someone has diabetes doesn't mean everything is caused by it, people without diabetes get this stuff as well.

Whilst I do have a few skin conditions (including psoriasis - which probably just showed up one random day out of nowhere) I'm pretty sure they've come down from my dad who is not diabetic but does have a couple of skin conditions

This is my personal experience only.

Psoriasis can appear at any time and yes it seems to be out of the blue, some say stress triggers breakouts or trauma, mine started when I was 19 and I fell off a gate on a night out (and that’s all the info you’re getting on that story! Lol) I dislocated my elbow quite badly and within 3 weeks I was covered from head to toe. I had it everywhere and I mean everywhere, my palms of my hands looked exactly like your husbands. I spent 6 weeks in hospital on a skin ward in my 20s and got most of it cleared up with strong steroids, tar baths and sun bed treatment. It’s never totally gone away though and I have patches on my elbows and knees and at the moment I’ve got a break out on the base of my back.

I also have it in some of my joints (psoriatic arthritis) and my nails curl so have to take extra care with my feet. I don’t take any treatments now other than Vaseline and oils to keep it soft and to try and stop it flaking, I also try and sit in the sun with high factor on for a short time with my affected bit exposed whenever I can. I was never given steroids in oral form just creams etc, which are great at treating the psoriasis but jigger up the surrounding normal skin, my skin in places is now very thin

My treatment was 40 years ago so things may have changed. At the moment I’m using a oil based ointment called Skinstuff that I buy myself, I get it from the internet, it’s quite expensive but they usually have a deal on and it lasts ages, I use it twice a day and I’ve had my tub 8 months. I’ll post a link for you later

It’s an autoimmune condition and when I was diagnosed with T2 the diabetic consultant said that Psoriasis can be comorbid with diabetes of all types. Mine is also very much improved since going low carb to control my T2.

My father suffers from psoriasis and gets flare ups when especially stressed.
As a child, I remember him suffering pretty badly (his finger nails started to disintegrate) and was on treatment from the hospital which included a black tar like substance that he bathed in (made a mess of the bath) and short stints under a sun-ray lamp.
It wasn't until very recently that I discovered psoriasis is an auto-immune condition like Type 1 diabetes and auto-immune conditions tend to stick together. Fingers crossed, I do not have it (yet) but I have wondered whether it is in my genes and has been related to my diabetes diagnosis as no one else in my family has diabetes.

I think it’s finding what works for you personally, I tried cetraban and it made me itch and it felt claggy on my skin, I like the feel of the Skinstuff as it absorbs much better.

OMG I remember those tar baths - the smell and it ruined my mothers bath, i used to go for sun bed treatments once a week too. I also had a cream call betnovate would “burn” off the plaques of psoriasis but if it got on normal skin it would burn it quite badly and turn it purple and would be very sore, it also turned everything it touched purple, bedding and clothes. It used to take me about an hour each morning and night to get ready as it had to be put on very carefully That’s why I stopped using any steroids and prescription stuff, it was clearing my psoriasis but ruining the rest of my skin.

I agree with autoimmune conditions sticking together, I’ve also got polycyclic ovary syndrome and that’s an autoimmune condition too, goes hand in hand with T2 as insulin resistance is a big part of it.
