I remember reading some of his (Yudkin's) work way back when he first wrote it. He was a voice in the wilderness, and it all made such good sense.

My father was very chubby in the mid 60s and at that time Yudkin's books were 'it' for weight lose, and that's how I first came across him.

Yes, I'm old enough to remember reading "Pure, White and Deadly" soon after publication in the early 1970s and the barrage of criticism that followed especially from the sugar industry, processed food manufacturers and of course Ancel Keys.

A legacy that led to a decades-long health catastrophe driven, not by real evidence, but by the influence of a few powerful personalities.

A moot point! Slight changes have occurred since. Big Food is using more sugar alcohols and emulsified starches instead of sugar in their products. (i.e. thngs ending in -ol or -in or -ose). Ice cream ingredients list need a degree in chemistry to read them. Lucozade has had the essential ingredient removed from it but new energy drinks are caffein filled bombs instead.. Black strap molasses is a diminuishing ingredient in baking recipes.

We have had the saccharine cancer scare, and now the aspartame cancer scare. We have Coke Zero and other concoctions to wet our whistles with.

But nothing ground breaking for sure. There is of course the Sugar Tax.
