Hi I’ve been going to the same endo for roughly 10 years and whilst I was originally told I was t2 in the last few years I was told I’m not t2 and actually have secondary diabetes. A little back story is basically caused from having radiotherapy and steroids during cancer treatment and also being born without a thyroid so I have hyperthyroidism, so apparently this is why I have secondary diabetes. I’m insulin dependent and currently take 9units with each meal whilst also taking correction doses and also on 22 units of xultophy . I’m just so frustrated as it’s taken this long to be told what type I have but because I’m not t1 I won’t be given a pump through the Irish healthcare and it’s over 4,000 to self fund so that’s not an option for me . Anyone else have any similar experiences as I’m finding it hard to find a lot of information on this type
Thank you

Did you have a blood test to rule out Type 1 ?

Hi yeah I had the gad and other antibody testing for type 1 , although one minute I was told they still can’t rule out type 1 and the next they saying I don’t have type 1 but they all came back negative so far

Negative antibodies don't disprove T1, positive ones prove it. I think the big issue here is that people whose diabetes mean that they need the same treatment as a T1 don't (yet) qualify for the same resources. I can only hope that the rules change with time.

Yeah exactly it’s really frustrating they really don’t care as it’s not them that has to inject themselves every time they want to eat or lower their blood sugar, they just say that further antibody testing may become available for different antibodies and I may test positive for one in the future but for now when I’m asked what type I am I have to say secondary which make absolutely no sense
