Hi Everyone- I have T2, am I covered under the Disability At Work / Equality Act? I’m based in the mainland UK. Seem to have got 5 different answers from 5 different websites, and some of them contradict themselves from paragraph to paragraph. Any yes/no definitive would be great, thank you everyone.

Hi & welcome to the forum :)

The act is there to give anyone with any condition that needs extra care or help at work or time to look after themselves etc. it ensures that the employer makes “ reasonable adjustments” as to your question the answer is I’m afraid “it depends”

All cases will be on a case to case basis as every individual has different needs. As to your T2 what adjustments would you need, that’s he question that would be asked.

For me as a T2 on no meds I wouldn’t need any adjustments at work on a regular basis, if at all. But if I was on meds that could cause hypos or insulin then that would be different.

This is the legal guide on Diabetes UK the charity that explains things well

Edited to correct punctuation so it read better

The answer is hard and the final decision on cover comes from a judge at a tribunal

The reality of it is.. as a T2 on either diet or tablet control (most tablets) you will NOT need adjustments under the equality act.

The only time you start needing adjustments will be if you are on hypo causing treatments where you may have to deal with the hypos

OR where risks are created by your illness and particular functions at work

So whilst a T2 on any form of treatment other than diet may be covered, it’s irrelevant as adjustments not needed.. the only benefit would be if you could prove you were directly discriminated against because of your condition

Depending on your particular T2 condition, and medication, I can think of one adjustment which may be needed. More frequent toilet breaks. Of course, this very much depends on your job, but some employers do limit these believe it or not.

You are covered, the "adjustment" you may need is time off for medical appointments. When I get questions on forms if there is space I write "I do not consider myself disabled, but I am covered by the disability discrimination act"

yes maybe if something like dapaflozin is used but even then they only say you'll need to go ahead couple of extra times a day

I'm on this - and it is certainly more than a couple of extra times a day for me. Regardless - even if once or twice - it is more than before and needs consideration. You would be very surprised at how funny some employers can get about toilet breaks.

What’s the clickable link to @aris I’m very cautious of clicking on a link that isn’t clear what I’m going to be taken to?
If you hover your mouse over a link, it should show you where it is going to at the bottom left of your browser screen.

I use a tablet so no mouse, also it is more helpful to our members to have a clear idea of what they are clicking on even if they can do that

On an iPad, it is possible to hold a finger on the link instead of clicking it. Which will provide a “preview.”
& further options on what you wish to do with it?

Also good point. I'd also say that the risk of a malicious link (YouTube) causing a problem on an iPad is very close to zero.

I know this @Jaylee, but it messes me up - you know what a technophobe I am ;) I use google and if I do that then it goes to safari- I click on the wrong thing - google closes- I loose my place, have to come back to DCUK via google - then my head hurts!

I know you’ll agree with me it’s better for all forum members to be able to see what they’re clicking on

You are wise to be cautious regarding links.

Regarding my employment history. I’ve never encountered the issue employees seem to have at Amazon.
I’ve had the odd dodgy tummy day in my time. But my employers have always been glad I just showed up…
The rest of the day they suggest, “you gotta do what you have to. When needed.” ;) when I mention, I might not be firing on all cylinders…
