A rare mistake

Just really annoyed with myself. On 2 Metformin a day, diagnosed 8 years ago, could probably go down to 1 or none. Very strict low carb diet, libre estimates hba1c at 39 for last 8 months.
Yesterday went out for lunch and just suddenly felt so fed up with it all and had a cheeseburger with a bun and no fries, but then for dessert - Nutella pizza with pistachio paste!
I went for a 40 minute walk straight after but of course my numbers are way up. Just kicking myself. Wondering if I could avoid this by making much more varied meals. I live in a small village in Italy where the food is very limited (by diabetic standards). In the UK it was easier to eat out - eg chicken tikka with any number of vegetable accompaniments or even for a treat battered fish, no fries, which made my blood sugar rise but not by much. Am trying to make sure I walk at least 2-3 miles a day.
Just a bit down and fed up of the whole thing.

Don’t beat yourself up, it happens to all of us now and then. The important thing is you know why you did it and what it did to you. You did it, it’s over, it’s one meal as long as you put it behind you and get back on the wagon then a few hours high BG won’t have done any damage.

Your idea of varying your meals may really help we can get jaded if we eat the same things all the time. Next time have the burger without the bun or even 2 burgers without the bun and ask for salad or veggies instead of fries .If you’ve got a sweet tooth and find desserts hard to resist when out then be prepared and have some sort of sweet treat with you like some high content chocolate.

Today is a new day get back on your normal plan and don’t be hard on yourself, as your title says it was a rare mistake and you’ve learned from it so that’s a good thing :)

Morning @Angelofthemarches Here follows a hard sell. There is a company in Northern Ireland that makes the most amazing flapjacks and chocolate coated brownies. They are called My Keto. The brownies are 1g net carbs and the flapjacks are 1.5. Its not cheap they are about £2.50 each and delivery to the UK is about £8.50 so I buy lots at a time. (and still a whole lot cheaper than a restaurant dessert) They are individually wrapped and really really tasty and one in my handbag has saved me many times in the situation you describe.
Good luck

Oh dear... I think this may mean you're... Gasp.... Human! The others are right, don't kick yourself around for a one-off... You're doing what you can the rest of the time, and sometimes you just need a nutella pizza with pistachio paste. I didn't know it existed, but I now know I need one, too. Not likely to get one, but ooh yes. If I ever make it back to Venice, I do think I may spend my bit of "holiday leeway" on something extravagant and weird, especially since I'd walk my legs down to stumps out there anyway. (I'd make my husband eat the bulk of it, most likely, but.... I would go for a taste, I'm sure).

Having diabetes doesn't mean you have to be an absolute dietary saint all the time. Just most of the time, and only if that's your chosen way to tackle this. So yay, you, for getting back on the wagon. Oh, and on the subject of burgers.... I've been known to order 5 at McDonalds. Without the bun, just one patty stacked atop another with the pickles and whatnot in between. It's like a miniature burger-cake, and it is very juicy when they leave the spongy bread off. We find ways to live a decadent life where we can, right? Right!
Hugs,
Jo

Don't be too hard on yourself, I allow myself two days off per year (Christmas Day and my birthday, they are about 6 months apart). Given that, I try to be good the rest of the time. Remember that diabetes is not a sprint event but a marathon and we all learn what fits our particular circumstances and body along the way. I remember one elite runner saying that she counted the steps taken between lamp-posts, imagine how many there were in a city marathon!

Keep on keeping on and plan in the occasional treat.

I did something similar a couple of weekends ago— Chinese takeaway of BBQ ribs in sauce and chips. Really enjoyed it but panicked when my BG went high for me, was reassured by the wise people on here. It is one meal - you learn from it, jump straight back on the wagon again. I have now decided that I will allow myself 2-3 treat meals a year as I am human and life is still to be lived. As for satisfying my sweet tooth I take a keto protein bar out with me - I have found one which doesn’t use maltitol .
