"What have you eaten" Parallel Chat

Forced myself to have scrambled eggs this morning. I haven't felt like eating for quite a while (led my appetite to the table but couldn't force it to partake) but this morning I thought "this is ridiculous and developing into something like an eating disorder." So I decided I had to eat. That seems to have triggered my appetite again because I immediately felt hungry again. The feeling is fading now, but I hope to be able to eat my next meal later today - goulash - already made and ready to reheat.

Spent a lot of yesterday (between collapsing in the chair) cooking to use the food I'd been ignoring so ended up with 3 portions of pork, mushrooms and black beans, 2 portions of pork with callamalloo, one large tub of pork ragout, 2 portions of pork with cabbage, one big tub of goulash and a single portion of braised cabbage. All except the goulash now in the freezer.

There's still a cooked chicken to do something with and a bacon hock (for some reason Tesco calls it a hough) plus some "fresh" haddock and some smoked haddock. I can feel a fish stew coming on as well as some pea and ham soup. Vegetables to use up as well so will make some more ratatouille and maybe some leek soup as well. Half an iceberg lettuce? Probably in the stew with some of the leeks.

Now to see if I can find some energy.

I've been wondering about podcasts. How do I get to listen to them? Do I need a mobile phone for that?
Saw you had a useful reply. Laptop is fine provided its got a sound card and an inbuilt speaker. Podcasts are just like lectures or talks some also use slides to illustrate the talk. I love listening on my mobile with ear buds but that's because I don't like sitting still for long! You'd probably really enjoy listening and watching one give it a try.....

Just nipped in after day one of my conference will post what I ate last two days on the main thread.
Wonderful break in Brum catching up with friends and an amazing performance of Amadeus Live with CBSO doing the live music. Beforehand had exceptional meal at Dishoom in Brum. Also fitted in a trip to the Ikon gallery yesterday morning to see Artemensis which is on loan from the national Gallery plus the sun shone for us all day.
Day one of the PHC Conference has been so informative and interesting so glad I bought a ticket. I got up very early this morning to head home in time for the conference as it started at 9. I listen to podcasts on ear buds so I can walk around and what I've been doing with conference is running it on my PC to see slides when chose to do so but listening to sound from the phones live stream on my earbuds. Very excited about tomorrow lots about mental health and loving chatting too.

The wonders of modern technology, eh? @shelley262

Never mind @Antje77. Thank you for taking all those photos.

Much as I enjoy home-made soups, it seems a shame to use asparagus spears now at the peak of their short season. That said, imported asparagus is available for most of the year and the fibrous ends of the spears, which are usually discarded, make a tasty broth which can form the basis of some delicious soups.

I have a patch of stinging nettles (growing well away from a path I might add), but have never experimented with nettle soup. Has anybody here had a go? (My plants are left undisturbed in the hope that a passing Small Tortoiseshell or Peacock butterfly will lay some eggs).
@LivingLightly , in light of that last call to order I thought it better to take my reply to this thread. ;)

I can't believe I did it again with the picture taking! :hilarious: I'm wondering if I'll ever get it right, I sure should have known by now.

Thankfully I made the yucky soup with the leftover ends and peels, and two very thick asparagus which I left whole for easier fishing out in case the soup wasn't a success. :joyful:

I have made nettle soup some years back. Can't remember how I made it though, and a search on the forum doesn't bring up anything about it so it was likely before diabetes.

I have also made an amazing nettle pesto once. No idea what recipe I used, I likely looked up some recipes on google before making it. :hungry:

Oh, and I forgot about this one, in 2021 I used raw nettles as an ingredient for filled tomatoes. :joyful:

Something odd is happening either on this forum or in my brain.

This morning I opened the WHYE Parallel thread to find a warning message from the Moderator about chatting on the main thread. I asked why it was there and NOT on the main thread. Now I have reopened both of them and the warning is now on the main thread (where it should be) but has gone from this parallel thread, along with my query.

Feels as though someone is messing with my brain. I didn't think my potential dementia had progressed that far! Going to crawl away and die.

This IS the parallel thread, isn't it?

Yes, this is the parallel thread.
The other thread does get confusing when people chat there instead of here.
Not just for you, @Annb . For everyone. Including the moderators. :)

Friendly but still confused. Am I losing it? I know I checked both threads because I was confused and I'm sure I was in the parallel thread when I read that warning. Beginning to mistrust either my eyes or my sanity. If I was correct, I think I should have been told so before my response was removed, or soon after. Feeling fragile right now.

It was here for a very short while, a mod must have accidentally posted it on the wrong thread, easily done when juggling multiple open tabs. It was quickly rectified, your brain is the one part of your body that works perfectly well!

Well day 2 of PHC Conference was exceptional too although last session on cholesterol lasted 2 hours and 15 mins and was a bit more challenging for my brain after two days of listening!
Early afternoon session though included Eddie Abbew and was very entertaining. His style is very influential for young people so it's good to see stuff happening to influence better nutrition at an earlier preventable stage.
@jpscloud I thought of you this morning when hearing an excellent session on food addiction and this resource was mentioned
It's not on their site yet but they mentioned that they were planning to run a liberate online course next month and thought you may be interested? If interested you could contact and ask if they could let you know about next course if it sounds like your thing?
Overall I felt the 2024 PHC conference was the best one ever and I'd recommend listening once it's released on You Tube later this year.

Bit by bit the larder is coming back together. There are still some things which live in the larder that I haven't found yet (or rather Neil hasn't found for me) but there are other things which didn't live in the larder before which now have a shelf allocated to them. They are heavy earthenware and heavy glass and I can only manage to carry one or two of them at a time, and each "journey" across the kitchen requires a rest before the next one. It's done now though so I can sit and rest and wait for my weekly phone chat with my brother.

Fish stew is cooked but I've put a thick cream and cheese sauce (made with extra thick cream) over it and will put it in the oven when our chat has finished - too late to have it now.

Wish me luck, I'll drop off my car tomorrow for its yearly APK (Dutch MOT) tomorrow, the APK will take place on wednesday.
My car is a Citroën C3 from 2001. I've already written a note on how to start the car to stick to the steering wheel for the mechanics...

"To start:
- Turn key to contact.
- Turn on ceiling light.
- Start. (Won't start if the ceiling light is off.)
Keep ceiling light on at all times or blinkers, dashboard and some other stuff won't work.
Turn off headlights before turning off ceiling light or the headlights won't turn off and you'll drain my battery.
Turn off ceiling light before turning off the engine or the ceiling light will keep burning."

Otherwise, my car works perfectly fine but you'll understand why I can use some crossed fingers...
If the car survives this week, I plan to visit the UK with it in October, so you might consider crossing your fingers for a different outcome. :hilarious:

I think I need a MOT myself with the physio. My neck is still annoyingly painful on the left side, pretty much managed with ibuprofen and/or paracetamol but not needed every day.
Yesterday, after working above my head with one of those cuties (pic.) on hedges for a few hours, I knew sleep wasn't going to happen as soon as I laid down, despite the ibuprofen taken well in advance. Not wanting to keep my neighbour (or myself) awake by being miserable, I had an oxycodon tablet from his medicine drawer and a lovely night of sleep. :joyful:
(Don't worry, I treat myself on a night without pain with his oxycodon or my own tramadol less often than once in a fortnight, which should be all fine.)

Today I've been hauling heavy wood, but on both days I noticed that my left arm isn't really functioning as it should.
Last time I was at the physio, he didn't think my complaints were caused by the herniated disk seen on an MRI in January, but I'm starting to have my doubts, with specific movements being impossible, and a feeling I have less strength in that arm than I should have. Hopefully it's just that I've been compensating for the pain in my neck by using all of my left side in the wrong way and paying for that now.

It looks like the coming week will be my last week of working on that ship, the crane will come on tuesdy to put the mast back, and the skipper will want to leave the shipyard shortly after that.
So I'll get an appointment with the physio once we finished reattaching everything to the ship.

Keep us posted when that happens pleas

Please keep us posted as to when that is please
Will do but may be a while - it was September last year. Do hope they release them quicker this year. Those of us who paid to attend can relisten for a couple of weeks but don't know why was such a long wait last year. The mental health sessions were particularly good I thought.

Will cross my fingers and toes for your cars MOT this week.

My car is in the fixing garage while we are away. It's an intermittent fault that mostly occurs either the day before we start a long trip, or 30 minutes into a long trip or when I have a heavier than average passenger !!!:dead: (is that an appropriate emoji?) but occasionally at other times too
It gives the very helpful (not!) message of "engine fault " nothing else!! Been driving me doolally for years. Never know whether to belive it or not.!
I wish I could find a cost effective way around it like you @Antje77 :)

From your post on that other thread - Are you thinking of Penticost, Antje? It is a Christian celebration but comes from a Jewish celebration at the same time of year. Do you get a day off for it in the Netherlands?

Or are you thinking of Whitsun? That's a church based celebration and, I think, is purely Christian.

Sounds as though your car needs its electrical system sorted out.

Ours does - it goes to the garage on Wednesday as well to see what is wrong with it. It could just be a fault in the display panel giving warnings when there is no need, but there's no way of knowing if there is need or not. It's a 2005 Renault and getting a bit shabby but it usually passes its MOT with no major issues.

It's the way our brains function @Antje77. It's hard to unlearn a habit once it's established. That said, you can do it @Antje77, I know you can. I'm constantly amazed that you've managed to absorb so much English vocabulary, not to mention idioms, in a comparatively short time.

Thank you for posting those links.
