Hi!

It’s been 10 months since a letter dropped on my doormat from my GP telling me an unrelated blood test showed that I was in the ‘Pre-Diabetic’ range and I’d get a reminder in a year to make another appointment to re-check.

In these 10 months, I have done nothing to alter my diet and my exercise regime to have had any positive effect on my Pre-Diabetes diagnosis. Although I consider myself reasonably active (spin classes, 8km walks, badminton, some 5-a-side) it’s my diet that is a disgrace. And at 5ft 3, I don’t have any capacity for spare glucose in my blood stream.

Until now though, having discovered this wonderful site. I’ve spent the past few days going through the forum and what a wonderful, informative & supportive community it is.

I’ve learned a lot, and learned that I need to take my Pre-Diabetes as seriously as if I were diagnosed with Diabetes. I’ve still my appointment to make in the next month or so to re-check, and am bracing myself to have probably progressed to T2 after 10 months of ignorance.

To that end, I’ve started the low carb regime and purchased a blood glucose monitor. My first readings showed 4.3 after fasting, and then 5.5 2 hours after a reasonably carb free meal of 2 rashers of bacon, 3 poached eggs, mushrooms & lorne sausage ( and HP sauce!) along with a sugar free fizzy drink.

OK for an instant snapshot but will have to wait until next appointment to find out the bigger picture.

Thanks for all the wonderful information on this forum that has woken me up to try and help myself!

Wel... Now you know, and you're taking action! Hopefully it'll show when you get your bloods done next. A HbA1c may be a sort of three month average, but it weighs more heavily on the most recent weeks... And you'll have been making significant changes in those by the time of the blood draw. Yay, you!

Hello again!

I started used this amazing website with all you wonderfully supportive people to start my diabetes journey, or pre-diabetes journey, coming up on 8 weeks ago now.

My Pre-Diabetes HbA1c levels 1 year ago was 43mmol, just inside the range, but Pre-Diabetic none the less.

I ignored all that and would have been heading dangerously close to Type 2 Diabetes had I not come across this website when I did.

The information I’ve gathered from this forum alone, from getting a Blood Glucose monitor, to low carb recipes & when to test blood glucose & why it might be higher/lower depending on time of day, illness etc. has helped totally transform my lifestyle to try and stave off diabetes for real.

So 8 weeks in, I’ve shed 2st in weight & have a low carb lifestyle that I really enjoy ( I lost 1.4kg after a weeks holiday in Fuerteventura!)

My energy levels are night and day to what they were before, and my HbA1c at my 1 year anniversary of being Pre-Diabetic is now at 39mmol, back in normal range.

I’m under no illusion that this change has to stick or I will become T2 in a reasonably quick time, but thanks to this website, the people and the resources, hopefully I can steer clear for a good bit longer!

We can say but you are the one who has to do. And your attitude and commitment has brought you well-deserved success. Delighted for you!
