High Blood Sugar

I have recently been experiencing really high blood sugar levels. This has been brought on because of stress from home mainly.

I am experiencing stomach pains and feel cross a lot, I also find it hard to concentrate and sometimes can't remember incidents. Is this normal?

Hi - a bit difficult to answer your question sensibly and safely without a bit of extra info:

-when you say "really high" what actual levels are you seeing and when?
-how are you testing?
-what type of diabetes do you have?
-what medication are you taking, for diabetes or other things?
-do you have any other symptoms?

That information should help people give you a better answer

Hi dwelldon, sorry you are going through stress at home. Stress does a real number on you. Especially if you are living with it constantly. Stress can push your blood sugars up in both diabetics and none diabetics alike. That’s really the top and tail of it. Your body is in constant flight or fight mode. It can trigger the release of cortisol, a hormone the adrenal glands release in response to stress. Stress causes you to feel constantly on edge and irritable, it can cause physical symptoms too, like stomach cramps, IBS and a host of other symptoms such as an inability to concentrate. That’s what stress does in general. We are not allowed to diagnose here, we are not Drs so I’m speaking generally. Obviously your Drs are monitoring your diabetes and if it is determined your raised blood sugars are down to autoimmunity then they will make changes to the way they treat your blood sugars.

If you are under stress at home, are you able to find ways of alleviating this stress or at least managing it? I know sometimes this can be very difficult to achieve depending on the circumstances, but managing your stress may give you some relief and possibly have a positive effect on your blood sugars. I talk from a place of having been in an extremely stressful environment myself. The way I dealt with mine , I would run, I would lift weights, it would give me some relief from that constant feeling of overwhelm . Just my thoughts.

Can you test for ketones?

Being over 20 and having stomach pains can be a symptom of ketoacidosis, which is an emergency.
DKA happens more often in T1s than in T2s, so with the doctor suspecting you might have T1 I wouldn't dismiss the possibility.

If you can't test for ketones at home, please call 999 or 111 if you have high BG and symptoms.
