Starting Jardiance tomorrow

Hi Everybody and a great 2025 to you all. Oh well, after 10 years of diet and metformin for BG control I'm finding it increasingly difficult to sustain good levels. A year ago was mostly in the mid 5s and up to mid 7s after eating. Now I'm mostly in the mid 6s and jump to mid 8s after eating. Last HbA1c was 6.7 up from 5.8 a year ago. Doctor wants to start me on Jardiance. Just wondering if anyone else takes this medication as well and how do they find it.

Hi Chris, Pretty typical of most around here. Restriction of carbohydrate intake. Maximum 20g per meal. Worked well for 10 years. I'm really only after information from anyone using Jardiance.

Hi Croc, I'm on jardiance and it's going well, it's keeps my readings in the green zone with no side effects. Research shows it to be a well tolerated drug with many positive benefits. I hope it works well for you.

No problem Chris. It's worthwhile asking even just for the purpose of information for other readers. For the record I've low carbed for a decade and it's worked pretty well. Unfortunately, the progressive nature of the disease in my case means I've two choices. Either reduce carbs even further from 20g per meal down to something like 10g or try the new wonder drug. Even more unfortunate that low carbs translates to higher fats in my diet which up to now hasn't been problematic. Over the last year or two I've seen increases in LDL levels that I'm uncomfortable with. I know that many here aren't concerned by this but given my family history in this area I'm choosing to keep it under wraps. I'm happy to try Jardiance if it has minimal side effects, I'm not keen on statin medication to lower LDL.

This is good to know. I took one today and definitely piddling more. I'll take a BG reading before bed and see if it has helped. Appreciate your insight. My kidney eGFR is borderline so extra pee may be useful. It has been this way for over 20 years, well before diabetes but hasn't got worse. Fingers crossed.

I started Jardiance four weeks ago along with insulin, due to high blood test readings and a high HBA1c 103. So I only have limited experience. Tablet had no noticable effect, did not see any change in water flow rates, or bad feelings. I have eGFR 0.41and according to the instructions it works at that level.
Doctor told me that it would also be good for protecting kidney and heart. The small percentage of extra sugar removed from the blood and going through the system is only a small, insulin does most of the work. However like all meds it is worth noting the possible side effects written on the instructions.

I am 67 years old, T2 and have been on Jardiance for two years and it’s all been good. Lost about 10lbs in the first year and have kept it off. Finger prick glucose around 5.6 each morning. Need to pee more often but that’s fine. Have had three yeast infections in the two year period but easily dealt with. I think that has been the only side effect. (I was also prone to yeast infections before taking Jardiance.)So much better than metformin which used to make me constipated. Give it a go If you are offered it, you can always change back if it doesn’t suit you. Good luck.

Thank you so much. I'm 67 as well and I took 1 pill yesterday and piddled a lot. Might take a few days to see how it goes. Fasting BG this morning was 6.0 which is a little better than it has been. I'll continue for now and see what happens. I'm still taking metformin as it doesn't give me any side effects. Appreciate your insight.

Just a brief followup. I've had 10 days of Jardiance now and have no side effects. It appears to be working quite well. BG seems to be about a point lower on average. Back to high 5s in the mornings. I pee more often but if I take it in the morning it's workable. Thanks to those for their input.

I'm a bit like you. Diagnosed in 2012 and managed for a number of years on low carbon and then Metformin. Eventually Jardiance was mentioned and after very careful consideration, I started on it. This was about 18 months ago.

I was a bit paranoid about potential side effects and made sure I drank more water but also upped the carbs a bit incase of hypos. I lost about 10lbs but a few have crept back on. My HbA1C results and finger prick tests have been great.

I did have a few issues where I thought it was the Jardiance causing irritation, but I am a menopausal woman and have the joys of that to deal with too! Happy days!

I checked out THIS site which says in part:

Bladder Cancer: Statistical analysis of 22 RCTs indicates that dapagliflozin is associated with bladder cancer. The use of dapagliflozin is not advised in patients with active bladder cancer. However, the meta-analysis revealed that SGLT2 inhibitors were not significantly associated with an elevated cancer risk compared with comparators. SGLT2 inhibitors, especially dapagliflozin, are not advised in patients with hematuria or a history of bladder cancer.

I'm 9 weeks in now and must say it is working quite well. Finger prick tests are on average around a point lower. Not much point checking blood pressure as it was good before anyway. I've increased carbs to 30g per meal maximum but is mostly well below this. Previous was 20g max. One thing that came with the high fat diet over many years was the last year or so while total cholesterol is pretty good, the LDL levels were creeping higher. Not so good considering my family history. Next blood test in a couple months should be interesting.

Look at the table in this article. Compare the number of bladder cancer cases in the placebo group with the 25mg Empagliflozin group. (3 versus 8... 5 versus 9... 4 versus 7...) It's nearly double each time.

But yet they go on to (attempt to) conclude that: "Based on the totality of the data, no imbalance in bladder cancer cases between empagliflozin and placebo were observed in the EMPA-REG OUTCOME trial."

Now... note that the original trial where all those bladder cancer instances were observed, and this subsequent article trying to explain it all away, were both courtesy of Boehringer Ingelheim, the makers of Jardiance...

Interesting that the Transitional Cell Carcinoma category is lower in the 10 and 25mg group than the placebo.
