I have just got home after going for an eye test. I have been having problems with reading and writing. I have Macular Degeneration in both eyes but it's much worse on the right eye. The news wasn't good. It has worsened on the right eye and while it is still dry AMD, it can change in an instant so I have to really watch what I eat because he told me, Diabetes and a faulty diet can make it change. I am getting new reading glasses in the hope that it will ease the problem. My other fear is that I have to give up driving. That will break my heart. :(

Thinking of you and hope you can manage what you eat to keep your eye condition from becoming more disabling - hugs to you.

Please don't despair @RosemaryJackson . Remember the A in AMD is for age, and if I recall correctly your age begins with an 8, and for many people AMD starts in their 50s or 60s so you are already beating the odds. There's nothing you could have done differently. It often just happens. And it is mostly very slow to develop.
The nutrion advice on the Macula society website is here
Essentially it's just to add certain veg , and that's not going to stop your overall low carbing for the T2.
There's lots of other advice and info on that site too

AMD is different to the diabetes related DMO, try not to get them muddled.

However, as you know I have eye problems and my surgeon stresses that the best diet for eyes is low sugar. I had quite a bit of carbs over Christmas (as we all probably did) and I've been noticing deterioration in my 'good eye'. I've been to the optician who could find no change so I'm hoping another couple of weeks back on my lower carb norm will correct it. I remember when 1st diagnosed and going no carb strictly and suddenly caused vision disturbances which passed after a few weeks. I'm hoping it's the same this time.
Certainly my vision is better the past couple of days than the past couple of weeks.
I think all I'm trying to say is don't panic, and if it means eating more veg and fewer "treats" that's not a bad way of being. Your not guilty of anything.

If I'm as vibrant and social and well as you are when I'm in my 80s I'd be proud, and probably very very cross that the "age" word is being used. I wish our bodies didn't age when our minds stay young !!!

So don't cross bridges until you come to them. When, at some point, you might need to stop driving there's options and money to help. You could look into Attendance Allowance which is non means tested and is extra money for older people with extra needs. We've just applied and got it for 89 year old friend. They are using the money for taxis and a cleaner... both luxuries in my book and I'm quite envious!

So no despairing, no being down, and lots of support from here xx

Sorry to hear that your eyes are becoming a problem. At our age some degeneration is quite common but, unlike with younger people, the progress is slow so it may not become a serious problem. Try not to become too stressed over all this - stress is likely to affect your diabetes and only make matters worse. Take a deep breath and think about where you are at now and try not to worry about what might be.

Thank you so much @MrsA2 for the advice (I've had a look on that website and I will go back to it), @shelley262 and @Annb. I have to admit I was overwhelmed by what the optician said and the fact that I have to go back in 3 months which is not normal for me. It's usually 2 years so that has made it a bit more frightening. Adding to the fact that reading and writing are more difficult these days. Thank you for the compliment @MrsA2, I don't feel 86 in my head. but my body isn't aware of that fact! It goes it's own sweet way. I hope you will understand what I mean when I say, Diabetes wasn't apparent, it had no physical symptoms to see except the bg readings so I don't think I fully appreciated that I am diabetis. But this problem has physical symptoms that I can 'see'. So I shall be taking more steps to counterract them. I know I shall stick to low carb eating now whereas I didn't before, not really. I'm not panicking now, I did yesterday, felt quite overwhelmed and 'lost'. My thoughts were chaotic but now, especially after reading your comments and advice, I'm pretty calm. So thank you, all 3 of you, I really appreciate it and you. :)

Breakfast was bacon sandwiched between l/c crispbread. A bread sandwich would be better, but I can't have bread so just have to do the best I can with the low carb crispbread. Tastes fine, if a bit on the crunchy side.

2nd meal will be a basic beef mince which I will then use for other things: bolognese sauce, curry, moussaka. There's enough there for at least 4 dishes (Neil came home with a large pack of mince from the supermarket). Some of them will have to be frozen though because they won't keep long enough in the fridge. I think it'll be just mince with some veg tonight and keep the moussaka for tomorrow - I don't think it freezes very well. The bolognese and the curry will freeze.

Yesterday,
skipped breakfast.
Cwc
Out for tapas lunch. Between 2 of us we had 2 large meatballs, a chicken kebab, 6 prawns, chorizo, baked aubergine and creamed spinach so not bad carb wise. Drank only water
About 7 had a Little ham and cream cheese on seedy crackers
A sq 85% chocolate

Today
No breakfast, just cwc before yoga and supermarket shop.
So 12 ish a crusty cheese omelette with ham. Half a satsuma

Mid afternoon a seed bar from Tesco own label

Then tonight hubby was cooking so a big performance and late.
Lamb curry with fat head dough. Very tasty but didn't have the heart to tell him I didn't need the bread.
Glass white wine

We both want to lose about 11 pounds and its difficult where he's not low carb as I think he doesn't need the fat. Trying increasing exercise and smaller portions ( but not tonight)

Skipped breakfast.
First part of lunch was 2 ready hard boiled eggs from Tesco. Had popped in for trousers and a kettle!
Second half 2 hours later was a tinned sardine in oil with some cream cheese on keto crackers.

Was trying to fill myself up as we were due at a neighbours for afternoon tea. So many goodies on offer. Managed to keep to 2 half scones with cream. Refused cakes and biscuits.

D: roast chicken with roasted celeriac chunks, buttered leeks and green beans and gravy... @RosemaryJackson with a very full plate I don't miss potatoes or yorkshires!

@Antje77 . As can't chat on the other thread...
Great cooking for Steve, but has he cooked for you yet??? Must find out the important characteristics to work out if he's a "keeper" ;)
I don't think he's much of a cook but he was a great excuse for Chinese take away last week. He offered, and somehow I managed to not have any glucose alarms go off all night.
No idea how I did that and no reason to get all smug about my bg managing talents, as proven by stubborn highish bg tonight because of, I suppose, berries and yoghurt. For which I dosed. Whatever, diabetes is weird.

But while he hasn't cooked, he did offer help in the kitchen chopping and cutting, and unasked for cleaned all the utensils I didn't need anymore while I was cooking and cleaned up after eating as well. He also shared the best bits with the dogs and cats, and woke up very happy when Panda (neighbour Tale's dog) came in very early to walk all over him in bed. I half remember a full conversation between Steve and Panda discussing how standing on a sleeping person with very muddy feet isn't the politest thing to do but the friendship was stil appreciated.
I also very much like cuddling with him, he feels good.

So yes, he's ticking quite a lot of boxes.
And then there are some very significant boxes he unticks. There's one on vaccinations. There's one on Trump. And I don't understand at all. He gave up his house to give some Ukrainian refugees a place to stay for as long as the war lasts (they've been occupying his place for two years now) and spends most of his time taking care of an elderly woman and her cats, living in the tiniest room in her house.
How can someone so invested in the well being of others think that Trump may make the world a better place?
He also said something about there being no proof that smoking causes cancer...

I have no idea what his preferred media channels are but I'm afraid they are not the ones I trust.
Still, his actions speak very loudly for having his heart in the right place.
I don't think he's a keeper long term, and I'll have to be very careful to not hurt him, he really is one of the sweetest people I've met and I think he's quite vulnerable mentally.
But for now we very much enjoy eachothers company.

Steve sounds like a very nice man but there has to be more if it is to turn into a long term relationship. Perhaps you can agree to differ on some of his views - that's what I have to do with my brother. He's very much right wing and doesn't hesitate to voice his opinions, although he seems to draw the line at Donald Trump. I just let him talk and ignore what he says. But then, he's my brother and I love him whatever. Not the same kind of relationship.

I dosed for the moussaka yesterday but it was very hot coming out of the oven so waited a while for it to cool down - and then forgot all about it. BG dropped, of course, but soon came up again so all was well. That meant I had moussaka for breakfast.

May not have another meal today.

I have in the past (and still do) managed relationships where we differed on issues, and if both parties are willing, it's easy enough to agree not to talk about those issues. We each have different lived experiences which created our views. Someone as smart as you @Antje77 could handle this easily, but it only works if both are committed to that level of tolerance.

First meal was at 10:45 2 scrambled eggs on a very thick slice of ham. Cwc

Walked to a funeral, and back. A lady who had been kind to me decades ago.
Didn't go to the wake after, mainly because I couldn't trust myself food wise.

Mid afternoon a handful keto crackers and a seed bar.

D: roast chicken and leeks reheated in gravy, with green beans. 2 small pieces fat head bread sticks. 1 profiterole.

Had a call today to arrange start date for "preventing diabetes" NHS course. Won't start until end March and runs for 9 months. 13 face to face sessions
She did a pre questionnaire . Height, weight, exercise etc. Nothing about food or bg numbers. I'm really interested to see who else attends.

It's given me a bit more of a spur to shift some pounds I want to lose.

“ a lady who had been kind to me.” I think that’s my favourite comment on here today. What a wonderful thing to be honoured for.

She had lived in our village for 60 years but moved away to be near family 10 years ago. She'd asked to be buried in the churchyard with her husband who passed in 1995. The family weren't sure who would still know her, so I felt it was the least I could do. Think there were about 30 of us in the end. A long life, well lived.

Small breakfast of full fat greek with seeds and 8 blackberries as fuel before a walk.
"Fast fitness walk " with local Rambling group. Billed as 3,5 miles in an hour, we cut off after 45 minutes to return slightly slower. We'd walkd to the start and back as well so we're out and walking from 09:30 to 11:30. Out of puff and heart rate up.
L: cwc. 2 scrambled eggs with leeks, ham and cheese. A cc chocolate pot with cream
Afternoon helping at old people's club. Only drank tea.
D: seed bar, invented but pleasing mix of hot, cooked, sweetheart cabbage strips topped with cold chicken and a sauce made by blitzing an avocado with lemon, olive oil, mayo and yoghurt.
1 profiterole (commercial) an 2 sqs hm lc brownie with coffee ice cream.
A rum.

@MrsA2 , I've been going slower at 2.5 mph but somehow it's worse for my aching legs and my arthritic hip. I tried the 3.5 and it seemed to work better. My grandson is a personal trainer and he tells me, yes, I should walk as much as possible but I should also be weight training! At my age, it would be better for me. I've yet to try the weights. ;)
