Back in 2010 I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes and was put on Metformin as well as other tablets which changed over time. I have never reallly had good control of my blood sugars. In 2016 I was put on insulin ( humelin I) and again was changed tablets and different doses and quantities of insulin, still never getting really good control although at times it was ok. In 2024 my diabetes nurse was at a loss as to why some times my blood sugars were not being controlled and I was having quite a few hypos and was referred to hospital diabetes centre.
In summary I had blood tests and was found through c peptide that I was not producing any insulin of my own and diagnosed with Lada ( latent autoimmune diabetes in adults) and put on basal bolus insulin.
Has anyone else been diagnosed with this and is there any advice that can be given ?
I am now treated as a type 1 diabetic

The NHS website still says that people cannot move from type 2 to type 1 diabetes.

I’ll tag in @Antje77 who has LADA and I think was misdiagnosed as type 2 initially. I think you were probably misdiagnosed rather than switched from type 2 to type 1.

Thanks for the tag @Rachox .

Hi @woody3090 , welcome to posting on the forum.

Like Rachox said, there is no such thing as 'progressing' from T2 to T1, they are two different conditions with completely different action mechanisms. What they have in common is high blood glucose but for different reasons.

Many, likely even most people with the LADA version of T1 are initially misdiagnosed, especially if they were over 30 on diagnosis. Worse so when older and even more worse when carrying some extra weight.

LADA can be very slowly in progress. (Mine was much quicker, I was on insulin within a month after diagnosis, even though I was believed to be T2 for a couple more years.)
But it's also possible you did have T2. Because they're two different conditions, having one doesn't protect you of deveoping the other, nd your T1 may be a more recent developed thing.

It doesn't matter really, you have T1 now with your LADA diagnosis.
So my advice is to read up on T1, and see about learning to adjust your insulins.
What insulins are you currently on, and what guidance have you received on adjusting doses?
You may be interested in a DAFNE course, which can be very helpful.

Keep asking questions!

My story is very similar diagnosed t2 in 2010

You have not switched types, you were always LADA, the trouble is LADA can have very slow onset and in early stages work well with t2 treatment, so there is a tendency for miss diagnosis

It was only in 2018 when I told my consultant that if I’m T2 I’m stopping insulin that extra testing was done and I was reclassified

Thank you for the information about the misdiagnosis and that I have always been LADA that has alleviated some of my confusing thoughts as hospital so far have not been very clear in my conversations with the nurse. I have an up coming appointment at the diabetes centre soon just waiting for appointment.

Medication

I currently take 4 Metformin,2 at breakfast and 2 with evening meal
Basal insulin ( humelin I) 10units am and 8units evening
Bolus insulin Nova rapid 4,3 and 5 before each meal respectively
Monjourno 10mg weekly injection on Monday
I have used a libre 2 cgm device since 2023 which I self funded until recent diagnosis with LADA which I now get on prescription.

I have had no information or instruction on changing my doses of insulin.

I have now found thread for LADA so will post on there in future

Thank you all for helping I will read link you had on your message.
