Ginkgo biloba eye safety

Hello,

Does anyone know whether Ginkgo biloba extract is safe to take with type 1 diabetes and background retinopathy? I’m considering starting as a long-term supplement but wasn’t sure if it increased the risk of eye problems. I’m planning to double-check with a pharamacist but would appreciate any info!

Ginkgo Biloba, the maidenhair tree, is not recommended for women before menopause as it increases bloodflow and can result in heavy periods as the lining of the uterus becomes enlarged. In later years it is considered beneficial for assisting bloodflow to the brain, and presumably anywhere else where it might be lacking.
I take a small amount as it has helped my feet since the Astra Zeneca Covid jab resulted in my lower legs and feet swelling rather alarmingly and becoming a nasty purplish colour. I don't take it all the time, but when my shoes start to feel tight I remind myself about it. In a day or so the swelling subsides.
As I do no t know if the extra bloodflow is due to relaxation of the bloodvessels or an increase in the pressure, it would be wise to seek further information of the exact nature of its effect, particularly if background retinopathy is involved.

On a single trial I think it might very well do just that. I set my stabber to one notch lower than the usual one and the drop of blood was larger than expected.

I’m considering supplementing with Ginkgo biloba extract because I understand that it improves blood flow. I get very cold hands/feet and experience Raynaud’s phenomenon in my hands during the winter. I read that Gingko can be used to improve circulation in the extremities as an alternative to medication.

I’ve also read that Ginkgo biloba is helpful in maintaining micro vascular health alongside blood glucose and blood pressure control. I’ve had diabetes for over 20 years now and thought taking Ginkgo supplements, alongside blood sugar control, could help prevent complications. I am currently taking a low dose of SSRI - I’ve added this info to my profile as suggested.
