Hi I’m julieclarke I’ve joined to find out more about T2 diabetes

Rheumatoid Arthritis ,is almost impossible to treat ,gabapentim caused me serious memory loss ,then Amitriptyline caused the most severe headaches ,I've ever experienced ,,and I have a phobia of pain meds, tried almost everything ,frustration is my worst enemy ,being a retired stone mason and always have been active .
Have you seen a rheumatologist @Davids Roost , as there are medications that can help Rheumatoid Arthritis, that only a rheumatologist can authorise.

I was put onto the libre system 8 weeks ago ,reason was due to severe arthritis and also had kidney removed ,2 years ago ,was a total game changer as to my sugar control as one kidney could be damaged by use of high levels of metformin ,so now on metformin and insulin (type 2). My blood sugars almost became impossible to control after kidney removal, hence insulin. sorry should have said ,severe arthritis causes huge problems with my hands ,hence reason for Libre2+

what fruit can i eat as i tend to eat alot of grapes, only they have 22gms of sugar per grape,
Strawberries, raspberries, blackberries are all usually fine. Small amounts of blueberries should be ok too.

One green grape will not weigh 22 grams. More like 4 grams so 0.6gms sugar according to the app nutracheck. But of course no one eats just one grape. 10 grapes will be about gms. Red grapes are slightly higher.

Yes grapes have a lot of sugar @julieclarke & are best avoided, the best fruits with the lowest sugar, but still not too many of them are strawberries, raspberries, blackberries & a small amount of blueberries may be ok. I can manage a small green apple with a main meal but not as a snack. Like always we are all different & its best to test before eating & 2 hours after to see if you are ok with eating them

how about cherries and mango as my husband makes a nice mixed fruit crumble but i am unsure whether i can eat it as the sugar levels maybe high, My husband says he doesn't put sugar in the topping of the crumble

Cherries and mango are high in sugar. It is likely the flour in the crumble topping might raise your blood sugar as well.

Replacing the fruit with raspberries would be a good start.

i have just had a look on google to see which flour is best for diabetes and it says brown flour or whole wheat is better that white as it lowers the risk of heart decease and type 2 diabetes which then means it is low in sugar

Unfortunately for many diabetics wholemeal flour raises blood sugar in the same way as white flour. If your husband likes to cook it is possible to buy low carb flour. I can add a link if he is interested.

A lot of us T2 use “replacement flours” rather than traditional flours, you may find even wholemeal flour will push your blood sugar too high. I don’t bake but I do make the occasional rhubarb crumble & I use almond flour, butter & a sweetener like stevia - it’s not as crispy but you can add a few finely chopped nuts to the crumble mix

Hi @julieclarke

If your husband enjoys cooking from scratch & baking and he is interested in recipes that are lower in carbs the easiest thing to do is to search google for low carb recipes.

If he picks your favourite food or recipe and just puts that into google with the words low carb in front then dozens of recipes will pop up.

Using your crumble as an example - if he googles “low carb fruit crumble” then he will have links to lots of recipes to choose from.

There’s also a website called DietDoctor that has some marvellous low carb recipes. Many of us here have used it. I’ve posted the link to it below if your husband wants to look at it
