Feel like I’m back to the beginning

So I’ve just had my annual review and my HBA1c rose from 48 to 53. My cholesterol has gone down to 4.0 and my weight has dropped another 3kg. Blood pressure normal.
I have just spent the whole appointment being told how bad it is that my hba1c has risen into the 50’s and I must go onto medication now as I am clearly not managing things very well.
I really thought I had things under control and now feel like I’m back to the beginning and they won’t listen. I have managed to get them to agree to another blood test in 3 months to see if things are back to what they were. Am I being unreasonable not wanting to take medication? The only people I know who are diabetic who are on medication just seem to be continually upping there doses and are nowhere near being able to stop taking it.

Can you think of a reason why you’ve had a rise? Are you maybe eating more carbs than you think? Carb creep is a thing & it’s easy to slowly go up if we’re not vigilant. Have you had an illness maybe - I was ill last year and my HbA1c went up to 55 from 48, I was on a very low fibre diet for about 3 months. Once I was better & back on keto it dropped back down to 47.

If in the next 3 months you try everything you can & your numbers don’t come down it may be time for something extra to help you. There’s no shame in needing meds & it doesn’t mean you will go on to need more & more. I decided if mine didn’t come down I would take some meds - I’d rather have controlled BG with meds than uncontrolled without. High BG is what causes diabetic complications not medication

I get so cross when I hear of HCPs only speaking about the less good results and completely ignoring the good. Well done on excellent control of your cholesterol, weight and blood pressure, that’s brilliant!
Your HbA1c rise of 48 to 53 is not a huge jump, if you think you know why it’s gone up and you can tighten up on you diet or exercise, whatever you think worked in the first place, then you can do it again, give it a try.
Me I do take medication, I only ever have taken a small dose and am not having to keep upping it like people you’ve met. I like to take a small dose, so I don’t have to compromise my diet any more than I have. My half dose of Rybelsus and 40g carbs/day limit does the job for me :)

Edit for typo

If you are not already, have you thought about wearing a CGM for a couple of weeks. I know they are pricey, but wearing one might be worth it, just see what your blood sugars are looking like over each 24 hour period. CGMs are great as you get the overall picture . You can see what is causing that rise in overall blood sugars. It’s a small rise, but I understand your frustration.

Dexcom offer a free trial CGM which lasts for 10 days.
