Testing sugars

Hi, I just got my new blood test monitor yesterday so started testing. I would just like an idea if the results are ok or not or if I need to change anything. I am trying low carb diet changes but introducing it gradually byreducing portion sizes of carbs.

So yesterday before dinner was 5.2. I had pork chops with new potatoes(reduced portion).

2 hours after, result was 7.2. I've seen that it should be no more than 2 mmol/l higher after 2 hours and no more than 8.5 so I'm within both of those. But I've also seen that the closer it is to before meal level is better. So should I lower the carbs more? As I love carbs or is this ok going forward?

Fasting blood test this morning was 5.7. is this ok? Normal? Should I be aiming for in the 4's? And if so how to I change this?

Thanks

@clhiett I can only say possibly. Trying to stick to too many rules can get a bit dismal - and I found that under 8Mmol/l resulted in further improvements over time.
Personally rather than reducing the amount I ate I chose to eat foods which are lower carb - with pork chops I often have the frozen stir fry from lidl.

As you have only recently started testing, @clhiett, it might be a good idea for you to keep records for a few more weeks. Those records should be your BG tests on waking, immediately before eating, and two hours after eating. Though you could vary the times of the ‘after eating’ (post prandial) measuring. This is because the timing of the highest spike in BG can vary.
After a few weeks of keeping records, you should be able to see how various foods affect your BG readings. Generally it is the carb foods that need to be reduced, and as long as you are not on any medication that could cause blood glucose levels to fall too low (hypo level) this should be fine for you. There are individual variations on how much carb foods can be tolerated . You may find that you are able to continue to eat some carby foods. The data you collect on BG levels and food and drink you consume will provide the info you need to make informed choices based on your individual findings.

On a personal level, I am happy with fasting level in the mid 5s, and aim to have post prandial readings below 8.0. I am human, so don’t always achieve that. Also, the fasting level is the most tricky to control. So I don’t get too concerned if it is above my preferred mid 5s.

Thanks. I got over enthusiastic I guess trying to figure this all out lol. I am planning on taking the readings for a few weeks just to get a general idea anyway. I have switched to some lower carb foods and ingredients but still want to be able to have some things that I enjoy that are carby so will carry on reducing the portion size of the carby part and upping the amount of protein slowly. I wouldn't cope switching to everything low carb in one go lol. Readings before and after lunch we're 5.7 and 5.8 after 2 hours so I'm pleased with that. I had 1 slice of normal toast instead of the normal 2 and a couple of table spoons of beans instead of half the tin, along with my 2 omelettes.
