Hi everyone,

I posted about a year and a half ago when I first got a diabetes diagnosis aged 40. My gp wasn't sure of the type as I don't fit the typical profile for T2 - never been overweight, very active, eat wholefoods.

My blood pressure is 122/71 mmHg, triglycerides 0.70 mmol/L, HDL cholesterol level 2.12 mmol/L and non HDL cholesterol 3.28 mmol/L.

I saw a consultant who ran more tests, all antibody tests were negative so it's not LADA and my fasting blood glucose was 6.6 mmol/L - UCPCR came out as 0.60 nmol/mmol. The consultant decided to pronounce me Type 2 even though 0.2-0.6 indicates the possibility of a subtype and over 0.6 is normally associated with T2 due to insulin resistance. It was hard to ask questions as she was obviously in a hurry to get me off the phone.

I have been prescribed metformin and told to focus on a healthy lifestyle, despite always having had one anyway. It's a bit frustrating as given my stats, I don't have insulin resistance so I'm unsure why I have T2.

We don't "cause" our T2 diabetes by eating certain foods or having a rackety lifestyle. It's a physical issue involving being unable to use the insulin our bodies make. I too had a very healthy lifestyle and developed T 2. J ust one of those things. But your figures look very good, so it doesn't seem likely that you will need to make many changes. Sorry your medic has not been more informative. That seems to be a common problem.

There are a lot more types of diabetes out there other than T1/LADA and T2, but T2 seems to be the catch all definition that gets applied when another type can't be assigned.

eg has your consultant considered T3c and MODY????

Some people never find out their specific type but just have to find a treatment that works for them....

I'm making too much insulin for t3 (C-Peptide/Creatinine Ratio
0.60 nmol/mmol and Urine C-Peptide
11.00 nmol/L) but I do wonder about MODY as there is a family history of 'slim diabetes'. Consultant said diagnosis at 40 and neither parent diabetic ruled out the need for an expensive genetic test for it though. I know different meds help some variants of MODY so I hope I'm not cut off from the right treatment.
