Hi guys.
I have my Duke of Edinburgh bronze expedition next Saturday and my sugars have been crazy. Now I got told they won’t let me stay overnight and I can understand why but I’m still pretty disappointed and upset. I am so close to going to school tomorrow and telling them I don’t want to do the expedition at all. I mean this whole year I’ve been reminded time and time again that I can’t do anything like everybody else and I have been really irrational and spent the last two hours crying. And I feel like I’m going to cry again because it’s not just “the trip will be fun” it’s the fact I’m denied opportunities over and over again and I have been feeling (last three months a lot more) that I hate my diabetes.

Has school offered an alternative?
Maybe check it out?
It does suck to have to be singled out and miss doing what others in your class are doing, but could you show the school authorities that you are mature and are handling the disappointment as well as the condition? It would be a shame to not continue with the ZDoE programme. There must be a compromise. I am sorry you feel so miserable right now, and hope you have some support from friends at school.

That is a massive shame, I can understand why you are upset. Is the reason that you can't stay the night because you are diabetic, or because your sugars are playing up at the moment? ( If the latter then there will be more opportunities in the future. )

If they are saying you can't go just because you are diabetic then I would contact the diabetes UK charity and ask for advice, as that seems totally unreasonable to me.

And here is an article from that site by a T1 doing the DofE, so T1 is definitely not a reason to skip the overnight trips

When you are an adult, I think your chances of being an astronaut or a fighter pilot are low, but there are actually very few things that you can't do with diabetes. Telling someone they can't do stuff because they are diabetic is just wrong in my opinion. And I don't think it's irrational to be upset by it.

Hormones are notorious for messing up blood sugars, and I would expect/hope that things will get easier for you when you have finished going through puberty. (Not that hearing that is any help for you right now.)

All I can say is try to hang in there and send you virtual hugs. Are your team helping you to get your sugars under control?
