Tonic Water: Sugar or Fructose Sweetened?

I admit to enjoying the occasional gin & tonic (who doesn't, who doesn't?).

Just wondering which is the best (least worst) option for the tonic water: sugar or fructose sweetened? I'm not concerned about calorie content, just the effects of the sugar/fructose content.

I have found another option which is stevia-sweetened, but can't find a stockist.

Cheers!

Hi @Skyrider "best" as with most things it only matters how it effects you.

I am sorry to tell you this but the only way to find out how it effects your blood sugar levels is through extensive research. ;)

I'll drink to that

I'm guessing that the sugar-sweetened version will be digested quite quickly, albeit it would be quite a low dose at around 7 carbs.

I'm more concerned about the possible effects of fructose (4 carb) on the liver rather than glucose/insulin implications.

I usually make some twining cold infuse rose lemonade with sparkling water. It makes a delicious mixer with gin and no worries regarding sugar or sweetener.

If I want to add fizz, I use soda water these days - bought a new bottle of gas for the incredibly ancient machine and an adaptor so I can use ordinary bottles for the water. I replace the plastic bottles regularly as there seems to be an infinite supply of them.

All joking aside @Skyrider if your drinking enough tonic water in your G&T to be concerned that the fructose in the tonic water may be damaging your liver (NAFLD). You should probably be more concerned about the effect the Gin is having.

Not a judgment.

Hmm, not tried soda water, I could give it a try...

Indeed, that is why it is just an occasional one!

Advice regarding fructose is very confusing, just trying to find out how much of an issue that amount would be & if it would be a better/worse option than the regular tonic water.
