Type 2 Any help to retrain? Hgv driver possibly to start insulin.

Hi, wondering if anyone can give me some information. I have type 2 diabetes which is currently managed by tablets, my symptoms are getting worse and I am worried about moving to insulin.
I have been a lorry driver for many years and don't have much experience of anything else, I am booked in to see doc next week and I have a feeling my licence will be taken.
Does anyone know of any financial help available to retrain for a new career due to health problems?
 
Hi, just gone on to insulin after being a truck driver for the last 25years 22 of them for Tesco.
Just had medical forms from DVLA can't drive LGV1(group 2) until they've done their checks,but i know I won't get my group 2 licence back, until I have 3 months worth of blood test on my meter & been a month stable on insulin.There are three stages,
the DVLA online explains it all. But hey what can we do our health is the most important.

I haven't got an answer to your question but I wondered if you had tried a diet approach along with your medication?
My symptoms disappeared when I switched to low carbohydrate diet. I cheated with my diet and they came back so I know it works, as do many in this group.

I'm sure someone with more knowledge on the employment front will be able to help soon.

Hi,

I don't personally know of anything but hope others will reply.
If you tell us a bit more about yourself, including last HBA1c, what meds you are on and a typical day's menu we may be able to help you get your blood sugar levels down which would not only be good for you as a diabetic but may result in insulin not being offered to you.
 
They won't take your licence read the new DVLA rules you have to show that you are monitoring and checking sugar levels on a daily basis for a 3 month period and you have a medical each year.

Agreed, but until those 3 months are up and you successfully pass DVLA medical you can't drive LGV. You can still drive a car.

Hi as was the same was told I was type 1 and had to wait till I had 3 month blood readings be very carful when getting the doctor to fill in the medical form .
I would get your consultant to do it they no more about you than the doctor does [well up in Scotland not sure about down south] I had to wait 7 month on them doing there checks so get the consultant they are better at filling in the Medical form

I'm sure you can given that you have only just started insulin therefore you won't have the records. Maybe give them a ring to put your mind at rest tel: 03007906801
As for retraining they do offer courses they vary from region to region I don't know why also the RNLI are offering courses which are linked through Dwp you will have to make an appointment at your local job Centre to start the ball roiling hope that helps.
 
I don't no if it is different for type 2 but type 1 as soon as you are told you are diabetic your licence is suspended till you get 3 months readings because you are Insulin dependent so not sure about you being type 2 .
You will keep your licence you just have to record readings more and test more but as I said not sure about type 2

WELL IVE BEEN IN THIS BOAT! send a letter to the disability officer at your local jobcentre,telling them what your current job is,and your health problem is and medication. there will send you information. your employer might have an inside job avaliable maybe one of the yard staff wants a drivers job you could swop jobs !

the problem is the DVLA medical board only supply short term licences to type 1 insulin takers. been an delivery driver myself your BGmeter is abit like a hgv tachograph, it records everything. all the readings etc so theres no saying this and that. it shows the hypos etc. and if you have too many hypos the DVLA get fly. do more checking.
