Weird things

So. I've been type 2 for about a year...but not bad. Recently had a bout with bronchitis and pneumonia and given some type of steroid for it. I am suddenly VERY thirsty, urinate almost every thirty minutes...and seem to lose weight daily. I read that the steroid can mess with my sugars.... But when I google "increase thirst, frequent urination" I INSTANTLY get "diabetes" results that mention weight loss.

So...here's the downside...

....I took by reading tonight....and my Contour device just reads "HI". Being fairly confident that it was just being friendly and greeting me... I googled why it wouldn't give me a figure and just says "Hi". The results....my sugars are higher than 600.

What am I supposed to do? Call doc and get off steroids??? Or is the over 600 reading a panic enough to go to ER? Never had reading that high.

Sorry for the long first post...just concerned...and don't know if I need to be.

Hi Zaphod

I do not want to alarm you further but a reading of 600mg/dl ( over 33 mmol/l) is extremely high and should require emergency medical assistance. Please get someone to drive you to your nearest A&E immediately. Do not drive yourself!

Do you feel any symptoms or is the meter reading the only indication you have of how high your levels are.

Did you recheck your levels.

I hope this is all a false alarm.

Zaphod

Did you check that your meter is within range using control solutions? Could your test strips be expired faulty?

Seek medical assistance anyway just to be on the safe side.

I've tried two different packs of strips...grant it one bottle of them expired in 2009 and one in 08/13...but I don't have control solution to test with.

I don't FEEL like something is wrong that I need to go to the ER...but I don't want to be wrong. Last night I felt a bit drunk...which was weird...but that's it.

It's possible that the expired strips are giving you a false reading but why take a chance.

You do not feel any different which is probably a good thing but go to the ER anyway. If nothing else it will put your mind at rest

Stay calm and go to the ER.

If as I hope you are not really at such a high level then you may feel a little embarrassed but no harm done. If you are at over 600 ER will take action to bring your levels down .

Might be an idea to take medication along to show them.

Are you alone or is somebody with you?

Were you hands really clean before you tested?

What had you been eating prior to the test?

I think you need to get another test from a doctor or in a pharmacy

let us know how you get on

I'm with Pavlosn, I really would go to ER for checks.

Given the problems l would say eat breakfast early and wash hands with soap well rinse with water and start back at basics. I dont trust these wipes they are impregnated with lots of fun chemicals and given you apparently know full well about breakfast... practice what you preach.

But that is my bad tempered Sunday morning advice after yesterday not following mine and shovelling food into my mouth 3 different times within a short time and spending the balance of the day feeling sick, throwing up and wanting a corner to crawl into. I blame the eggs x 6 one of them must have been off was one lot with bacon one lot with mushrooms one lot with cheese.
l refuse to believe it was cause l wasnt hungry and forced them down me and thereby being my fault.

Wow, 6 eggs, bacon, mushrooms, and cheese. I couldn't have eaten that even in my old days.
I would suggest the op doesn't eats anything at all at the moment, with bs reading that high.

They werne not all at once 2 and bacon at 9am 2 and mushrooms at 11am and 2 and cheese at 15:00

And my suggestions werebecause l read the wrong post sorry put it down to my dying in a corner :depressed:

Will edit it

How how frightening! I've never like steroids...

So I came into town today and to my office (where I have my spare meter). It tested proper with the test solution. Checked sugar and it was 467 after only a small portion of eggs.

Again...I don't feel bad...just wonder if it is the steroids.

Steroids will have an effect on BG levels and potentially increasing your appetite and for me make me feel a little hyper. Take after food before midday as it can also cause sleep disturbances.
