best porridge

wow thats great..... mine was 7.3 this morning and 13.0 2 hours after breakfast again :-( and thats with taking a gliclazide aswell

Think my mistake is making it with milk
will try again tomorrow and make it with water and see if that works

Well the steel cut oats arrived and I've had porridge for lunch :) I made the recommended serving for 1 person using 50g and 1 cup of water and some salt and simmered them for 15-20 mins (not a super-fast snack). Started with BG before lunch of 9.2 (high for me but had a hypo so was rebounding). After 1 hour still at 9 so no spike with these. Will report back the 2 and 3 hour readings later when I hope my BSs will have come down with the correction included in the bolus. Loved the taste and the chewiness of them - nothing like the packs of quaker rolled oats so not to everybody's taste I guess.

So which brand did you go with Riri?

5.7 after the 2 hour mark. Result!

Great result btw:)

I ordered them from Amazon and they're called 'now Real Food' . I think the company are based in Edinburgh, I got free prime delivery with amazon but they were expensive at over £7!! I have worked out that they will last a month so I'm ok with that.

No sorry Annie.
Meant to say with this type of steel cut oats I've just seen a recipe that says to fry in a little butter the night before (until it gets a bit nutty smelling) then add the water and salt and bring to the boil and then just switch off the heat and cover and it will be ready to re-heat quickly the next morning. Apparently it gets creamier but not soggy. Going to try that tonight now that I'm on a porridge roll!!

That's great Riri I shall take a look, I'm well stocked with porridge for now but will save the website for when I'm running out :)

have just seen the mornflake on sale in home bargins to 49p a bag also the do them in ready made sachets aswell 12 for 99p :-)

Just to let you know I had it for breakfast and my blood sugars were at 5.4. Now something told me to bolus on a dual wave basis so I gave myself 2 units up front and 1 unit over a 2 hr extended period. Major hypo territory after the 1 hour mark so that didn't work. Glad I didn't bolus the full 3 as usual - something told me that starting at a much lower reading (was over 9 last time) may give me problems. Not sure what to do next time as I was seriously over blousing and no rise in BSs later either. Think I may just reduce the dose to 1 unit (from 3) bearing in mind the above. **** - thought I'd cracked this one!

Cant tollerate porridge well at all :yuck:
It spikes me hugely - plus hard to digest comfortably .
So I leave it well alone .

Hubby however loves and swears by flannigans irish brand of porridge though .
It is more coarse in grain and appearance than some other brands .

With me its like trying to digest concrete :banghead:

I eventually got some steel cut oats from Holland & Barrett Riri and tried it this morning, have to say it has a really nice nutty taste and I do like the texture.

I put 50g of oats in the pan last night with water and brought it up to boil, I then turned it off and covered it and reheated this morning adding some milk, seeds, blueberries and yoghurt, definitely will be getting some more from now on :)

I am loving oats for breakfast, made with almond milk, with a bit of cinimmon and a squeeze of lime x
Keeps me going all morning.....

I might give those steel cut oats a bash if I can find any. Personally I do go with the rolled oats and I use the big fat whole ones rather than ground/milled.

I add almond milk, frozen berries, chopped fruit, nuts, seeds sometimes make savoury porridge etc.

I find quite frequently that my blood sugar actually drops if I dose based on carb content due to the low GI.

Is the almond milk not overpowering, I've never tried it before.

For some unknown reason....Everyday Value porridge plus 2dsp crushed almonds made up using boiling kettle water plus 1dsp thickish plain yogurt works a treat... not high in carb and get good bg levels 2-3 hrs later

Any one know what quinoa porrige is like for BG levels

I eat quinoa porridge and I think it doesnt cause much spike (Im on insulin type 1 but dont need much to cover this poridge). I cook it with cinnamon, vanilla extract and almond or soy milk (and a bit of sweetener). you can add pumpkin and sunflower seeds too

I use the alpro unsweetened almond milk on cereal - it's lovely. ElyDave - what do you do in respect of bolusing with your porridge? Glad you like them Nobelhead :)

Not really, it's a very mild flavour. I can't stomach normal milk, but I can drink a cupful of this as cocoa quite happily.

Much lower carb than normal milk as well

I find the Alpro milks to have a funny tang to them. I prefer the Blue Diamond unsweetened

I normally make it for me adn my son in the morning and I've found that 1 mug = 100g oats, add a mug of berries, comes in at 30g carbs. I usually bolus at 15:1 for breakfast, and only worry about the drop if I'm driving afterwards.

Typically I might go from 5.5 to 4.8 2hours later, not enough to worry about a hypo unless I'm starting low.

Hazelnut milk is really yummy too. I moved to soya about 2 months ago and have almond or hazelnut too. Tastes yummy in coffee. My tummy seems to tolerate it a lot better than normal skimmed milk :) x

Thanks Dave, I was just curious as to the taste, I make my porridge with half milk half water so the carbs aren't a problem.
