Michael Gove and his insane educational? policies!
Is there anyone else out there who is facing resistance to being on a LCHF diet? So far today, 3 works colleagues (all teachers!) have given me this lecture, when declining rice with my meal! Apparently one knows because she "planned her diabetic dad's meals!" I have tried explaining that there is more than 1 school of thought, as well as masses of scientific evidence but to no avail. My sister-in-law thinks I'm arrogant for not following the advice of the diabetic nurse from hell's advice "it will get progressively worse and you need to eat more carbs." When I pointed out that there is a doctor in Sweden with a health blog who checks out and advices this diet to his patients, I was greeted with the response "oh so you found it on the internet" and "you don't live in Sweden" nothing like a bit ofxenophobia!
Conversation with diabetic nurse went as follows:
-Aren't rice, potatoes, bread and pasta carbohydrate which turn to sugar in my stomach and then increase the sugar levels in my system? Why, as a diabetic would I want to do that?
-That's why you need to eat slow release carbs.
-Won't that have the same effect?
-No. You will have used all the energy up before it gets into your system.
-Thought that blood sugar was carried to my cells by insulin then used as energy?
-Right. I am referring you onto the diabetic nurse at the hospital.
-Can I have a blood sugar monitor?
-No you don't need one. The tablets bring your bs down.
-didn't you just tell me that different foods affect my bs and that it was trial and error as to what would work for me so therefore I would need to test before and after meals.
-Like I said, the tablets bring your bs down and we don't give a monitor unless you are on insulin.
-Doesn't this contradict Nice?
No response(Stoney faced silence)
- I have lost 4lbs.
-that would be the diabetes!
Conversation went downhill from here.
Thank you for letting me rant!

Ohhh I am so glad someone else has this constant ear bashing off the diabetic nurses! Not glad that you're getting an ear bashing of course but I am sick to death of being told by the diabetic nurse that I must have a decent portion of carbs at every meal time I feel like I am banging my head against a brick wall most weeks now I choose not to enter into the carbs conversation with her. The dietician I seen was no better either and now I am just waiting to see the usual dietician as she's away on maternity leave but she needn't start at me about slow release carbs , I've more important things to do that listen to contradictory waffle read from a printout of really bad advice. We need to do what works best for us as individuals and not have it drummed into us that carbs are the way forward

Thank you! The website UK Diabetes (where medical professionals get their advice) advises people in its recipe section to make cakes with half the sugar! For <}#{#>{#> sake! why would I want to eat cake? I'm diabetic! You'd think that they'd be prepared to look at scientific arguments, wouldn't you? Nowhere does it explain why carbs are good for you!

Lol the half sugar in cakes really astounded me , where the hell are these people coming up with their ideas?! I am almost convinced they just pull them out of a hat like some twisted tombola. The dietician told me I can eat chocolate as long as I cover t with enough insulin, I'm not a fan of chocolate but it horrifies me that people are being told they can basically have as much chocolate, cake or sweet things as they want as long as they inject for it!! I am beginning to think that the whole eat carbs thing is just a way to stop people wanting to know what sort of low carb foods they can eat or the alternative to carb heavy meals.

I was close to getting into a similar situation today, it will probably happen sometime next week.

I had the OGTT test Wednesday. 2h reading was 13.8 so def diabetes. I was actually a bit shocked and had wanted to chat a bit with my GP but he was occupied. Oh well I thought, he will give me a call later on. No call Wednesday, no call Thursday as he was off sick, Friday morning I managed to talk to the DSN who said but your diabetes is very little. HOW DO MEAN said I, either you are diabetic or not, right? As in either you are pregnant or not? But she couldn't say if I was pregnant so to speak. Or like I had felt, if had cancer. In her opinion I might have something slightly amiss with a few cells, but not cancer or in our case, not very much diabetes. She meant I shouldn't worry until my bloods went really bad. So I asked her if it wasn't a better idea to give me a blood glucose monitor? Oh no, we only give them to people to have to watch bg'/on insulin, to sick people and you are not sick

Ok, a OGTT of almost 14 is not sick enough. How do I go from here to avoid getting sick enough for being prescribed a monitor without a monitor?

And around the mulberry bush we went a few turns. But she did admit I had a point, not that she was willing or indeed able to do anything about it.

And I have decided I will not eat anything that contains grain of any kind for the time being. Scandichick, you know you do the right thing, keep at it. I suppose you have to get used to it. Invent some handy allergy if needed.

Hej på dej! If it hadn't been for you I wouldn't have found diet doctor. I am on holiday now so intend posting on the Swedish site. My work have even told me that I must leave my teaching room to test and go and stand in the book cupboard adjoining my room to test or our office, leaving my classes unattended which is a disciplinary action. I do not eat grain either. Out of interest, are there not more doctors and nurses in Sweden who are supportive of the LCHF approach - I thought that government advice had changed? Do they refuse to acknowledge the blog? Surely the good doctors credentials must mean something?
I advocate a cattle prod for these annoying people. One with an adjustable voltage depending on the level of irritation you feel. This is probably illegal but everyone can dream right?!

You have my sympathy, Scandichic. If you think the nurses are bad, wait until you meet the dieticians lol

- do you eat meat?
- no I am vegetarian
- do you eat fish?
- er...no I am vegetarian (Fish are not vegetables. Even my cats know that!)
- you must eat rice.
- why? It has no nutritional value. I would rather eat cauli rice.
- you must eat noodles.
- why? They have no nutritional value. I would rather eat beansprouts.
- you must eat porridge.
- ok. *fingers crossed behind my back* :p

I am now covered by the new Obamacare, so I can now see medical specialists. I plan to forestall seeing the Diabetes Nurse and the Dietitian until I've completed the list of other specialists, so, fortunately, it will be a while. In the meantime, I'm preparing a dead-pan reaction for when I have my sessions with these two.
However, I've read on-line that American nurses seem rather well-versed in the advantage of low-carbs for people with DB, and the same with dietitians, so they may not be as obnoxious as what UK patients experience.

I am new to all this (T2DB)but for the past seven weeks I have been using the balance diet approach. I have been balancing the available insulin in my body and the exercise I do against the carbs I eat, and checking that I my BG monitor shows that my post prandial reading is within the NICE guidelines for non-biabetics.

The SD Codefree monitor can be bought for £12 and the testing strips cost under £14 for 100. This allows 7 tests per day for under a quid. The cost of testing is more than funded by my reduced expenditure on food by cutting out the junk and unnecessary food.

Hope you have better luck than I have had! I teach teenagers so very little generally phases me and I am known for having bags of patience when explaining things but some of the responses I have had from so called professionals have made me want to scream. I am not highly patient with adults as I feel that they should know better. If it were not so serious, I would laugh! I was so tempted to ask "why are you so fundamentally @&/-::4,!!! Stupid?" Or "did you buy your degree from ebay?" But thought it might be going a tad too far! Thank you for the expletive gif, I laughed out loud and woke my husband up! Makes me think of the old joke "do you wake up grumpy in a morning?" "No I just let him lie in! " he has been a star! He gets up every weekday morning and makes me brekkie?! Just off to watch the Olympics! :)

I don't know if you have ever watched Allie McBeal but she has little fantasies (no not those sort!) where people who annoy her get scooped up and put in a skip. I have much more violent ones. I don't know if you've seen pulp fiction? I refer to the scene with Tim Roth and his girlfriend, sitting in a cafe. They are exchanging romantic endearments, then she stands up, produces a really big gun, and shouts" non of you f::;?!&@ p'&£@'! Move or I'll execute every m?!£()!@ one of you! " I'd love to be able to say this just once but I feel someone might sack me or arrest me! This is why this website has been my sanity and made me laugh so much!
