I have been following the LCHF diet since the 28th January 2014. I was 16 stone 1lb and went down to 14lstone 13lbs this week. I now weigh 15 stone 4lbs in 2 days. How? I am panicking as I have stuck rigidly to diet. What am I doing wrong? I did introduce exercise at the week end and this week but very gentle. Depressed :(

Please don't shoot me as I come in peace!;) but is it your time of the month? My wife always gains water weight(Up to 7 pounds) just before she starts.

Time of the month can do that to me. Bloating.
One of the many joys of owning ovaries!

That or water retention your body for some reason your brain doesnt know has retained water often happens.

I have also posted on weight loss.... throw your scales out the window and get yourself some callipers. These pinch the fat and tell you what % fat you have. Exercise will loose initial fat and you will gain muscle (ok not after 2 days) but as you progress. Muscle weighs more than fat and is misleading.

Good calipers will have instructions on their use and often a weight chart so you are not gazing at a box. Here is a generic search of what l am talking about (ignore digital and fancy get the bog standard pinch calipers in the majority of the pictures)

My husband has just asked me if I am in the virtual pub again! Cheek! Thank you for all your advice! I shall just persevere! Onwards and upwards ( but hopefully not the weight!).

What about garrotting? Have you seen my thread about axe murderers - lol! Not in the least offended but to answer the question, no! Got a cold though! :(

Do you weigh yourself at the same time of day and in the same circumstances? It is important to do this. If you weigh yourself a few times a day as an experiment, you will see how you gain as the day goes on. It is also not a good thing to weigh every day. Twice a week is enough. I do understand how you feel, though. It takes away the motivation.

I weighed my self around 10 days after diagnosis; I was packing and doesn't everyone weigh themselves, then lift their bag and weigh themselves again? I next weighed myself almost exactly 3 months later. I knew I was losing weight, because my clothes were loose, but, for me, that wasn't my primary objective, so I didn't bother.

I must admit I have since invested in a fairly sophisticated scale which measures my fat and muscle ratios, as well as weight and BMI tracking. I initially weighed myself daily, to reassure myself of the scale's consistency, but I plan to step on a couple of times a month; just to ensure I'm not creeping up.

this is going to sound strange but how your posture is when your standing on it can effect it, dont ask me how because how can poster change your weight but it can, or at least ive noticed it before

Sorry to upset you but it wont give a real measure of your fat use the calipers and throw the scales. And it matters not on time of day same place for the scales etc. All it shows is weight and that is immaterial you need to loose fat.
Just get the calipers and sling the scales or as you loose fat and gain muscle you will show yoyo weight that will cause the reaction you have now only worse... that's why people who try and loose weight don't succeed much... they use scales

i understand what you mean because of your experience but scales are a useful guide, i weighed myself twice a day while losing the weight, i know its not the be all and end all but it is a good indicator

i dont disagree, but scales are also of use, maybe only when they say you got lighter though lol

Me too.. I would never ditch my scales. Why can't she do both scales and calipers... if she wants to. I for one, don't see how they could work. It reminds me of the 'pinch an inch' thing that was around some years ago. Plus the fact the new scales she's bought are hi=tech and measure fat-to-muscle ratio.

We have been conditioned into weight being a problem which is as criminal as the diets we are pushed towards it isnt weight it is fat that counts. Yes it is like the pinch an inch thing you want to get rid of fat. As you loose weight and in most case of people who want to loose weight they exercise and as they exercise they loose "weight" (fat) but gain muscle. The only way not to gain muscle is never to exercise which is to be honest stupid because you want to loose fat to get healthy.

So initially you get on the scale and get excited that you are loosing weight. This is good but then you start to gain some muscle and the scales start to show that not only have you stopped loosing weight but you are putting it on. It is at this point people stop trying to loose and go back to eating because what is the use of doing something when it isnt working. You dont have to loose a lot of fat for muscle to start to gain and l am not speaking about being a body builder just toning your body up.

What is actually happening is that you are loosing fat which is what you should be doing but you are gaining muscle also good. Fat is very bulky and muscle is tight and heavy. The scales just show weight but do not give a real reflection of what is going on with your body. They do not show the body mass shrinking as the fat is used up but calipers will because you go from pinching big folds to smaller and smaller amounts. There is a simple calculation to work out how much at you have lost.

I look on calipers as a Low Carb High Fat diet and scales as a normal calorie diet. 2 very different things yes you can do both but you will still find it disheartening because we are so weight and not fat programmed.

The scales that you buy to measure fat don't they have algorithms that do basically maths based on the fast being discredited BMI (of course the nhs love bmi) If you do a calliper grab and a scales weigh l will guarantee that while they may cross at the odd point (trying to be nice to scales) they will not read true like the callipers will. Because scales are based on faulty science ----- bmi.

Calipers will tell you where you are loosing fat and where you are not and you can work on those areas. Scales just say an amount of weight.

If you want a total read of body fat you are going to have to book an mri scan so us normal folks have to stick to sensible ways to read the fat.

What's wrong with scales and a mirror?
Calipers can't tell you if you're losing any internal fat, which is important, but a mirror can tell you if you losing fat under the skin, and putting on muscle mass.
