not losing weight!!

I just heard an interview with Jayson & Mira Calton (authors of "Naked Calories") who are big on micronutrient sufficiency - because it wasn't a book, I can't give you references, but they made a couple of interesting statements during the interview:

(1) Women who are Vitamin D deficient are usually 16.7 lbs heavier than women who are Vitamin D sufficient
(2) 80.8% of overweight women are micronutrient deficient.

Food for thought...

Then of course you've got stress and cortisol, sleep quality and who knows what else to worry about :banghead:

What was the product?!

I saw my consultant yesterday and mentiond that i want to lose weight, he said I can start to take Metformin - I've been type 1 for 27 years - He advised i start on a low dose and build it up to avoid any side effects, and at the same time reduce my Lantus dose slowly and try to lower my carb intake, therefore lowering my Humalog dose - obviously exercise too.

Has anybody else (Type 1) tried taking Metformin and did it cause you any side effects or help you to lose weight ?

Hi Jovi
I am on metformin 1g am and pm along with humalogmix 25 breakfast and evening meal. I have lost minimal weight despite being on metformin for many years. By the way I have slow onsetT1. I am now LCHF and have started losing a little weight very slowly. This could be due to the many other drugs that I am on.
Just don't lose heart.

I'm on Metformin, low carb healthy fat, I walk, weight train, and I have put on weight. Off to see an endo soon to see if they can figure it out.
I also take Vit D.

Hi dawnmc, what were your thyroid numbers? Have you had antibodies checked?

Not sure what my thyroid results were, they just said 'normal'. I'm hoping the endo will be able to help.

I feel your pain :( :( :( I've been trying so hard with no result!!!! I go to the gym three times a week and I eat well, but nothing! Yet my friends will diet for two weeks and lose a good few pounds!!!!

I hope so too. Anyway, ask for a print out of the test. Come to think of it, ask for all tests to be printed.

Normal is very wide and often very un-normal for the individual. Few of us feel normal with a TSH above 2.5 and then TSH wont say anything at all if the pituitary isn't doing it´s job properly. Get the results and post them here or on a thyroid forum.

I was ill indeed with a TSH of 2. Actually, I was ill with a TSH of 0.9.

From my own experience yes it is harder to lose weight as a T1. In my case it's often because I've been "eating to the insulin" and nervous about lowering my basal rate. For me to lose weight I have to adjust my habits to eat less - like a non diabetic person - but I also have to tweak my ratio and basal at the same time, otherwise it doesn't work. For years I literally had no idea how I could lose weight. I know how to do it now, but it's definitely harder than for non diabetics.

Having said that, I think the OP and other posters are doing everything right and still struggling. :-(

Is your blood glucose control better? Have you been having hypos? Are you eating any of the ****** Atkins branded snack products?

Remind me if you are T1?

I am type 1...my bloods have improved slightly over last 36 hours...am on 26 lantus in morn and 20 at night. Taking 4 units novo at each meal approx regardless of ther being no carb.......
I dont know any branded atkins products....ive listed everything I eat in my post
Eggs, cheese, meat, fish, peanuts, some almonds, lettuce, cauli, broch...occasionally plain greek yoghurt
Dull and boring but consistent
Lots of water...decaf tea and coffee...no milk in them
So utterly utterly fed up I could scream

Would your GP let you try T3? Or refer you to an endo?

I am self medicating with NDT, the thyroid extract from pig´s thyroids and it is wonderful, I have no symptoms at all apart from lack of outer part of eye brow but can live with that. Many of find it so much easier to loose weight with T3 added or when on NDT. I am not sure you should mention you want to loose weight though, if you are not seriously over weight as this has been a problem in the past, people wanting drugs with T3 in purely order to loose weight.

Have a look at Stop the thyroid madness, an excellent site for thyroid sufferers: http://www.stopthethyroidmadness.com/

Get your results from the last couple of years.

Get your Vitamin D level checked. As soon as I was diagnosed with a deficiency and put on supplementation, I started to lose weight whereas no amount of dieting prior to that made any difference. Though being on insulin probably makes losing weight even more difficult. Vitamin D deficiency can also be related to hypothyroid.
