Hmmm.. probably a lot less than stuff I like
How do I overcome decades of procrastination? Anything to do with losing weight / getting fit / living healthy can always be started tomorrow. Instant gratification (i.e. the biscuit in front of me) always defeats me.

I'm prediabetic with a slowly, but steadily rising fasting BG (have been checking every morning for over a year now). Average BG In March was 6.22. BMI is 44.2. Age: 64.

Occasionally I manage to give myself a push and follow rules (lose a pound or two) before I fall off the wagon again with a big thud.
 
Giving things up in my experience never works. The "diet" of lettuce leaves and carrot juice is a non starter.

I like to look around and find a new meal that I really like but does not contain loads of carbs and then have that once a week. Then I go and look for another one. Each time I eat such a meal I don't eat a carb laden one.

My first discovery was a chicken stir fry with oyster and spring onion sauce. I replaced a processed crud meal with that. I stayed with the stir fry idea and ate broccoli and beef with soy and garlic sauce. I actually look forward to these so it is not a hardship.

I bought beef and pork joints and cut them into generous steaks. Two thick pork steaks with a little apple sauce and salad is not what I call suffering and we have three main meals already.

So don't give up things, take up things that are better and it's a breeze. Get a different personal menu.
 
Google some foot amputation pics and print one off ! That should help :)

No, it doesn't.. My mother had gangrene and went blind (she was diabetic). I then swore to myself that it would never happen to me. If I ever were to show signs of diabetes I would never eat anything again that I shouldn't.

And yet, I am still in denial now.

I like that idea. Perhaps I have always either stood still or run too fast. Taking 'baby steps' may be the answer.

Actually, I have just done what you suggested. And you are right. It has put me off from living in denial. My mother died in 1984 and I guess it has been so long since I saw the gangrene in her foot that I almost forgot about it.

I will look at these images every time I fancy a biscuit.

Someone on this forum referred to his evil friend by which he meant that little voice that keeps telling you that one more biscuit couldn't possibly do any harm His evil friend had won the first round apparently which meant he imagined he was in a fight. This is a fight that all the yo-yo dieters know very well and they never win.

It's easier, to continue the metaphor, to give the evil friend something he likes but something that is short on carbs.

I do not exercise but I take my dog on healthy walks,play with old cars with tools that cause me to use loud language.
I refuse to eat salads.only because I do not really know what a real salad is. eg; try a roasted vegetable salad.
I did no what procrastination meant until I looked at Google, Sounds a bit lazy to me, therefore time to for a wake up call.

Enjoy your new change :):) sorry for being a bit cheeky but sometimes a self inflicked kick up the rear end does help.

that also sounds like a good idea. Must try to visualize an 'evil friend' alter ego.

Trying out a different personal menu.. Had a couple of hard boiled eggs with smoked salmon and tomatoes for lunch. Banana for breakfast (must try and get some breakfast ideas that don't include either toast or cereal) and will have chicken breast with lots of vegetables tonight. For snacks perhaps a fruit salad (love it) or a finger size bit of cheese with grapes (love it also).

I think the way forward is to eat food I love rather than nibble on something I loathe just because I'm told it's good for me.
 
Bananas aren't a very good choice really. Do you have a meter to check what food does to your blood 2 hours after you've eaten?

Yes, I do, but I was in a rush this morning and just grabbed a banana at the supermarket and eat it before getting to the car. I'll check the before and after BG the next time I eat a banana.

I really need more breakfast ideas, and also ideas what to eat during the night when I can't sleep. I suffer from insomnia and often don't get tired until 4am or later, but as I eat dinner at 5pm, I usually get hungry by 1 or 2 am. In the past I usually had weetabix (big no-no, I know), or a sandwich. But try and get something that will satisfy me as well as keeping the BG low. Obviously don't want to start cooking at night
 
At the moment I'm alternating between Greek yoghurt with a few berries and coconut shavings, and the T2 diabetic full English of egg, bacon, tomato, mushrooms - and maybe a (good quality) sausage or slice of black pudding if I know I'm not having too many more carbs later in the day.
 
Nuts and a chunk of cheese for snacks 14 walnuts are supposed to be very good for us ! Dont know if you O/D if you have 15:confused:

Peperami, boiled eggs, avocado chopped up with tuna and mayo. Boil half a dozen eggs and keep them in the fridge to grab before you leave.
