Hi I was just wondering if having problems with ketones is normal with type 2 as I've heard that type 1 usually have more trouble with them.
My doctor is unsure which one I am yet. I was in hospital last week with ketones of about 3.0. They went down to 0.3 but have crept up to 1.0.

Ketones are a normal physiological response to fat burning and the levels you're talking about seem to be in the normal range for a dieting type 2 (especially if you're using a restricted carbohydrate diet). Ketones are usually an issue for Type 1s if they're associated with very high BG levels.

If you're unsure what type you are and aren't dieting, then it's probably a good idea to be monitoring both BG and ketones.

from your other post you have high BG, high BG and ketones can make you very sick DKA Ketoacidosis
it might be time to get to the hospital again for more insulin, or at least ring up, the nurse ringing you next week isn't on, you may have been misdiagnosed as T2

nutritional ketones from LC are a different story and come because of low carbs/BG and the body burns fat and is not insulin deficient, which you have shown to be from your last hospital stay

Ketoacidosis is a serious condition associated with illness or very high blood glucose levels in type 1 diabetes. It develops gradually over hours or days. It is a sign of insufficient insulin. Most cases of ketoacidosis occur in people with type 1, it very rarely occurs in people with type 2.

Without enough insulin, the body’s cells cannot use glucose for energy. To make up for this, the body begins to burn fat for energy instead. This leads to accumulation of dangerous chemical substances in the blood called ketones, which also appear in the urine.

Thank you Jack... I checked both blood sugar and ketones this morning. Blood sugar was 17.9 and ketones 1.3... I'll contact my diabetic nurse if I can.

Looks a lot more like Type 1 with those numbers.

If ketones go over 1.5 with BG that high you need to call your nurse or Dr soon, as you could develop ketoacidosis which is a serious condition.
 
I'm glad you're ok this morning, I'm a pleb that has only read stuff for a couple of months, it's just that your symptoms aren't what I've been reading, it seems more T1.5 or T1. If the DN fobs you off a bit, take it further

Thank you... I'm keeping a close eye on the numbers... I'm just glad they gave me a machine to check because having read on here of the problems people have had about getting one.

Emmy-Lou, be very, very, careful, I agree with @jack412 and @robert72, a T2 shouldn't get ketones AND high BG readings. If I were you I'd present myself at A&E and get them to take a look at it. Certainly don't be fobbed off by a DN, you need proper medical advice.
