DVLA - not sure what happened

I would like to buck the trend and thank the DVLA for the fast efficient renewal of my driving licence!

I followed the procedure recommended by my DSN. The DVLA had a few questions which they came back to me about, and as I have background retinopathy I had to attend a local optician to have my eyes tested.

My 3 year driving licence was issued in less than a month.

My DSN recommended that I send 3 months' test results to my consultant along with my completed form. She said that he would then write a letter with his recommendation and send this with my form to the DVLA together.

I was told that this can speed up the process dramatically - it worked for me!

Mine took around 7 - 8 weeks to come back although they did tell me they were carrying out checks when I rang the DVLA, the guy on the phone said I'd still be able to drive even if they hadn't got back with my new licence before my current licence ran out, he said that I'd be covered by Section ??? (can't recall what it was) as they had already acknowledged my forms.

Might be worth giving them a ring in the morning and chasing things up.

After getting on the blower - to a recorded message that just plays same
old circular useless info !
Hubby emailed them and insisted upon a reply from them !

RESULT - new licence in the post today
Came with letter explaining they had run a medical check on "me"
Before issuing me with a new restricted 3yearly driving licence .

Still concerned at the length of time all this has taken .
Taught me one thing for certain - apply as early as is possible to do so
'next time around' .

DVLA should be sending you letters keeping you updated on the status of the process. Mine took 7 months 2 years ago then I was issued with a license for a year only. They gave me a 3 year license after that expired. Even if you pass the expiry date of your current license you can still drive while the DVLA are making their decision. At the time I'd had had laser treatment 11 months previous so fell into the 'Have you had...... in the past 12 months category'. It was a total carry on at the time as my ophthalmologist had completed his paperwork right at the start and my Hba1c was spot on and I get this tested every 6 weeks.

I also want to confirm the DVLA were excellent sorting out my licence. I was diagnosed as T1 at end of March. I was too ill to drive when I came out of hospital, but pulled the form to report T1 to them from the internet, filled it in and posted it back mid April. After 2 weeks I felt better (and we'd just collected a new car which helped!) so I emailed them to check what was happening and also to confirm whether I could drive while waiting for their decision. I had a reply confirming they were looking into it and I could drive as long as I satisfied certain conditions (Drs permission etc) pending their decision. This also meant I had something in writing confirming they'd had my form, so if anything happened I had proof they'd had my 'report' about being T1. I had a letter requesting my old licence a few days later - may have missed it but when I printed off the form I didn't see anything about sending off old licence on form - then once received my 3 year licence came through a few days later. The whole process took less than a month.
