Raw Mushrooms. Don't know why.
I've just been recently diagnosed (although I don't know if it's T1 or T2 yet). Since I've started the treatment (insulin and metformin) I've been getting really bad blurred vision, which has got worse over the last few days. I can focus and I get 2, maybe 3 seconds of clear vision, but then everything just goes fuzzy. Has anyone else gone through that, and how long did it last if you have?

Plus, can anyone recommend any good breakfasts to have? I've been on shreddies so far but I've noticed that they're giving me a huge glucose spike.

It's a lot to get used to isn't it!

Ben

Yes, once I started.on insulin vision was very blurry, lasted about 3 months, could not read food labels which was a pain trying to carb count. vision eventually back to usual with a bonus of no longer needing glasses for driving which I had.been using for three years previous

Hi and welcome:)
are your bloods still high as when first diagnosed alot of us get poor vision due to high bloods, i myself have oats so simple but lots cant take porridge.
you will get used to it, dont worry as its early days;)

Hi Ben,
Sounds as if the treatment or dose may be wrong, I would phone the GP asap just to be sure all is correct.

I am not the best person to recommend a breakfast as I am on a vegan type diet.

Best of luck.:)

My sugars are down quite alot. I was at 26 when I was diagnosed on the second and I've come down to average about 6-7 pre meal and about 10-14 post meal. It's frustrating though, I'm studying with the OU at the moment and because I can't read well I'm finding it hard going. I'll get there with it I guess.

Blurred vision is very common when first diagnosed due to elevated BG levels. This usually disappears as levels slowly return to "normal" levels. As for your breakfast, Shreddies not a great choice. Try a nice omelette. If you must have cereal, oats may be a little better but it's trial and error..

Hi Ben - welcome to the forum, I'm sure there will be many well informed people here who can help you with all the questions you might have. Regarding the blurry vision, I had exactly the same prior to and after diagnosis. As my blood sugars came down it got worse before it got better - but it did get better once my blood sugars stabilised. It did take quite a few weeks for normal vision to return and I managed to get by with using really cheap reading glasses from Tesco in the meantime. It is not worth going to an optician whilst your vision is fluctuating as you may waste money on glasses that are useless in a few weeks' time. With regard to breakfast - perhaps try scrambled eggs. I'm alright with porridge, but I know a lot of people spike with this - there will be others who might give some better ideas for you with regard diet. Best of luck, hope you soon get everything under control.

Omelette is out for me, as I'm not a huge fan of eggs. I may try something other than cereals though.

Sausage and Bacon sounds pretty good actually. I guess I'm going to have to experiment around for a bit until I find what works for me. Thanks for tips though, I've not been thinking all that clearly for the last week and I probably wouldn't have though to try that for a while.

After diagnosis my vision went very blurry for a couple of days. I thought I had broken my eyes. My doctor told me that due to the high glucose in my eye, moisture was drawn from my lens due to osmosis(or may have been the other way). Good news is my eye sight is much better than it has been for ages now

That's good to hear that your eyesight has got better. My doctor told me pretty much the same thing but he was a little unclear with me how long it would last for. Here's hoping that my eyes will catch up with yours soon!

Blurred vision happened to me too when I was started on insulin at diagnosis. Prior to that my vision had improved because of high blood sugars. Within a few days of injecting insulin my sight became increasing blurred making it impossible to see the hands on the face of the clock at my bedside.

Slowly, after about three months my eyes had returned to my pre-diabetic visual range.

I hope so too mate. It sounds like a lot of us have had the same thing to different degrees.

Hi Ben, welcome to this terrific place. You should find much reassurance, support and advice here.

Re breakfasts, I have a whey protein shake in the mornings which I make up myself with almond milk, a mixture of fresh berries and some chopped ginger root. I was recommended to Dr Mercola's brand which has added chia seeds and is low carb and zero sugar. (Carbs = 5%; calories =160; sugars = nil) It makes a filling breakfast and is good to start the day with protein, and know that we've had a fix of our 5 a day in one hit :)

Good luck with everything

Diana

Hi Ben, I got blurred vision when first diagnosed and it was scary! Thought i was going to lose my vision. However after getting my blood glucose levels down, it returned to normal within a week or so. So don`t worry, good luck.

Thank you everyone for the replies and the reassurance! I was told to expect to be a bit blurry but I'm not sure I was quite prepared for what I've had over the last few days. I'm glad I'm not the only one who's experienced this, although I do wish that none of us should have had to go through it. Thanks again for the answers.
