Type 1 and Type 2

What is the deciding factor to determine what type you are? I presume people go to the doctor with similar symptoms and then they are sent for a blood test and they go from there?

I had to do a urine sample which had lots of glucose, I was then sent for a blood test and told to come back in a week where I was put on metformin and told I was diabetic but they don't know what type. I came back a week later and still had glucose in urine and sent for another blood test. I was sent to hospital and taught how to do insulin and check my blood etc and this is where I was told I was type 1. My readings that day were in the high twenties. Was the number the deciding factor?

I have a very healthy bmi and I an very active.

After 4 weeks of using insulin I have good numbers, nothing above 9 and I am reducing my insulin daily on my pump.

Do you think I could come off insulin and try the metformin again?? Would it be worth asking?? Has anyone else done this?? I am aware of this being the honeymoon period, but what if I was misdiagnosed as type 1 and could manage it with pills like type 2???

hi there is a blood test called c-peptide or something like that, they can do this to determine if your something cells in your pancreas are working lol sorry im no doctor, i was mid twenties and had keytone present at diagnosis but am still type2 far as i know so i dont think diagnosis is down to you bg number, hopefully someone with a brain will be along to explain :)

I suppose anything is possible, but find it hard to believe that you would be told you were type 1 and put on a pump if they weren't sure of the diagnosis. Then again, I'm not in the UK, so don't understand how the system works over there.

Hi. If you have a good BMI then it's most likely that you are a Late onset T1 (LADA) with those sugar levels but they really should do a c-peptide test to check insulin levels and a GAD to check for islet cell antibodies and hence confirm T1. Metformin doesn't have much effect on blood sugar particularly if your BMI is god. There are other drugs such as Gliclazide to simulate the pancreas but to be honest being on insulin is much better overall as it can give very good control and has few side effects apart from being on hypo watch
