I heard that insulin is the most effective drug to control diabetes and is much stronger than medication like metformin. I am a type 2 and was wondering if the Dr would give me insulin if - or when - my condition got worse?

Insulin is a must for T1s and may be needed for T2s who have progressed. GPs are reluctant to prescribe insulin until really needed i.e. when three sets of tablets no longer work. The reason is the perceived hassle for the patient and need to test before driving each time etc. Hypos are also a risk. T2s who are overweight really need to reduce weight before considering insulin as an overweight T2 is probably insulin resistant and therefore already has too much insulin. T2s who are struggling but quite slim may well not actually be T2 but mis-diagnosed T1s and probably need insulin

Well, sorta yes - unlike other drugs, there is no limit to the amount of insulin you can inject whereas there's only so much insulin your pancreas can make even with drugs to stimulate insulin production.

Your doctor should consider insulin therapy after unsuccessfully trying other medication.

There are more Type2 on insulin than type1 i think the ratio 3 to 1 in the UK i think it over 300K and that is from a 2010 study but number could of increased further as there are more T2 who have been DX since 2010
