To lower your bs when you start low carbing? Yesterday morning my bs was 14.7, 2 hours after breakfast of Alpen and vanilla yoghurt my bs was 17.1 by lunchtime it had gone down to 8.7, 3 hours later it was 8.4 couldn't test at 2 hours as I was at work. It was 8.3 about 8pm I had a small bowl of scrambled egg and some yoghurt. I went to bed at 10pm and my bs was 7.2. My morning bs was 5.7, 2 hours later later after the same breakfast is was 12.4!?

How many carbs per 100g in Alpen? Also I wonder if the vanilla yoghurt has added sugar? You might be better off with natural Greek yoghurt and berries.

lol, if you start low carbing it should reduce quite quickly but may be erratic, I've seen people tell you that cereals are bad but here we are again, your gonna get the same advice but hey ho

Sarah - even if you are using the no sugar version of Alpen, the dried fruits are little sugar bombs. Yummy, I know, but sugar bombs nonetheless. Your other levels look better though, don't they?

I'm not a true low-carber. I'm like lots on here, I low carb, but eat some carbs, provided my meter talks nicely to me, after testing. I found that boxed cereals were no good for me. I didn't try making a muesli mix myself, thinking I'd rather go cold turkey that withdraw the nice things I like, like a dripping tap! But, I have found I can have rolled oats (the full oats, not milled like Ready Brek), with semi-skimmed milk. It returns my (usually) highest reading of the day (but importantly it's still low 5s), so I go with that. When I started eating it, I did weigh it to 40g as I was tempted by just a bit more, but now I can measure that portion by eye quite well. I add the milk and just leave it a couple of minutes to soften the oats, and it's actually quite creamy, and very filling. These days I also add a dessert spoon of milled bran, as I find it,..... errr,........ helpful.

You will have some trial and error, but you are making an effort, so well done!

Do,you use myfitnesspal or,another food diary? I'm afraid I'm evangelical about myfitnesspal, as now I'm into it, it takes moments to record my food intake, and I can go back and review what happened when I last ate whatever food I might be planning. And, drum roll.......... I am now (a few months on) able to add back some of the foods I had to give up at the outset, as my pancreas has had a bit of a rest, and my insulin resistance is much better, having lost weight. Most importantly, myfitnesspal has lots of nutritional Information in it, so makes carb counting a easier. You can even scan barcodes on packaging, which is helpful.

Sarah, keep going. Initially there is trial and error, but you have the tools, and we'll help you, provided you are helping yourself.

I thought changing to Alpen was a better solution, I can't eat things like egg and bacon, omelettes, cold meats, cheese etc in the morning! Turns my stomach.

im sorry theres no nice way to say it, cereal is bad, if you have no alternative then you will be eating too many carbs and your blood sugars will be bad

my opinion only

Sorry to be blunt again but with an HbA1c of over 9% cereals are a no-no for you (And most type 2 diabetics) unless you eat a mouse sized portion which will just lead to massive hunger pangs and low energy levels.
If you want good BG readings and a healthy weight without constant hunger then it's low carb or the highway and the highways final destination is diabetic complications most likely I'm afraid.

Thanks for your advice. I don't know how you have been diabetic for such a short time and know so much? It really makes no sense to me at all these bs readings! Two hours after my lunch at 1pm my bs was 7.7, I got in from work at 7.45 and my bs was 10.3, I've had nothing inbetween so why has it gone up. Does eating at regular times make any difference because that is something I can't do. I must say I didnt buy no added sugar because it wasn't on offer, it was the original 1. I also don't have lots of time when I go food shopping (i dont drive so have to go with someone else) to be looking at labels. I used to snack sometimes on sultanas and I see I'm not able to do that now. There are so many things with carbs in I had no idea! Is there anything like Tracker bars (couldnt think of another make) that are ok to have as a snack, I go down the aisles and there is so much choice the same with yoghurt! It seems from replies I've had flavoured ones are no good!

Off topic a bit Sarah but was it you who said on another thread that you'd had DKA and ended up in hospital with it once? I only ask as that sounds more like you're a type 1 that's been misdiagnosed and if that's the case it does need reviewing as a matter of urgency.

you can research the carbs online before you go, no there is nothing like trcker bars, i have personally spent three hours in the cracker aisle looking at every single label, atkins bar are good for me but at £2 a pop not cheap, shopping is simple if you make a list of low carb ingrediants and just buy those, then make stuff with it....example shopping list

lettuce and any green leafy salad stuff
cauliflower, cabbage, butternut squash, obergine, brocolli, asparagus, peppers, mushroom
berries
beef, lamb, chicken, pork, mince
bacon
cheese
eggs
yogurt (full fat)
sausages
jelly lol
double cream
nuts

now how many meals can i make out of those ingredients? i didnt read a single label

find 7 meals you like that are low carb then repeat them in order whilst you research alternatives

Yes that was me but what happened was, I'd completely lost my appetite 1 day and also felt ill. So I remember my DSN telling me if you don't eat you don't inject so I didn't and didn't take lantus either so I think that's why I ended up with DKA because I didn't eat for a few days so no insulin in my body.

hold on? im sorry if you take insulin and your bg is high? cant you compensate with insulin?

You like vanilla yogurt, you like strawberries (from other thread) you like Alpen.

Why not try full fat Greek yogurt and add a touch of vanilla extract and some strawberries? For Alpen-like crunch, add some nuts or desiccated coconut or seeds.

You can lower the carb content of your cereal by adding ground almonds and chopped nuts, it will still be quite carby but less so and you hardly notice it.

Hi Sarah,
If you really can't eat anything but cereal for breakfast, there are a number of low carb "muesli" recipes online that are carb counted and you make yourself very easily . Though you need to buy separate ingredients it actually works out cheaper in the long run as the total makes enough for weeks worth of muesli :)

The recipe I use , I make up one batch a week, is 3g carb for a 55g serving, and all but one ingredient (linseed) comes from Aldi . The linseed I buy in bulk in an Asian grocers as I use a lot, but they are also available in Tesco, Asda and Aldi sometimes.

I think you mentioned in another thread you were seeing a dietician ? How did you get on ?

Sarah, I'm afraid you have no choice but to read the labels and avoid high carb foods. My wife makes our own muesli but you can buy n-sugar added cereals and there are quite a few brands. Perhaps you local store is very small? All the major supermarkets stock no-added sugar products amongst the mountains of junk food
