Diagnose stories and d days

Diagnosed 49 years ago just before Easter. Even though I was only 4 1/2 at the time I remember it well. My parents took my Easter egg away from me and gave it to my older brother. I still haven't forgiven him for that, even though I don't particularly like chocolate. :)

50 year medal soon :)
 
I dont think that I will apply for the medal either as all it will do is serve as a reminder of how long I have been diabetic and still needing to use insulin. When I became D in 1966, I thought that a cure would be found within 20yrs but no such luck

I've only recently been diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes so I aren't totally sure what are d days?
 
Diagnosed 6th Feb 2014. Was thirsty for a 3-4 months before - up to the point where I could drink the whole 2L bottle of water in one go. Didn't eat much, because my stomach was always full of water :p Lost about 15kg in total and had severe muscle problems in my legs. Started as normal pain in legs as if they were tired, then walking up the stairs was a problem, then couldn't run, then could barely walk - I would trip out of no-where (my legs would just give out) and couldn't get up on my own.
Went to the doc on Monday (3rd Feb) and on my way there I tripped in the middle of a pedestrian crossing and a car was coming in. Couldn't get up of course. Good thing my boyfriend was there, he picked me up and basically carried me to the other side :oops:

Doc diagnosed proximal myopathy (muscle weakness) in both legs and gave me tons of blood tests to do. Did the tests on Wed morning, got a call on Thursday that I have D, need to go to the hospital immediately, there's a nurse waiting for me (doc arranged it all). Asked to talk to my manager so I can go (didn't have to after all). Went to the hospital, saw a nurse within 10 minutes, got checked for ketones (0.6, so "a warning"). If my ketones have been higher, they would have admitted me to the hospital straight away. My blood sugar on the test was 50mmol :D

Got told by the nurse to check the ketones until they "clear". Got 1.5 the next morning :confused: Wasn't sure if I should go to work or A&E :rolleyes: Went to work and they were 0.3 in the evening :joyful:
 
My diagnosis was 36 years ago in October, I had lost so much weight I could barely stand up and was drinking out of every tap I could find. My Mum had taken me to the doctors one evening because I was being sick , the gp came round to the house early the next morning to take me to hospital. It was the day of my school trip to visit the remains of a Roman villa and I can remember crying because I really wanted to go and see where people in togas used to live.

A Doctor was waiting for me at the hospital and said " Are you the diabetic girl"? I answered "No" as I'd never heard of diabetes at that point. I was kept in hospital for 2 weeks being shown how to test my urine for glucose and how to inject with a big clunky syringe that was stored in surgical spirit. We had to buy our own supply of disposable needles as back then they were only supplied free to drug users. I was made to drink a 10g carbohydrate helping of warm milk with every meal and a nurse watched me until I had finished it, I haven't drunk milk since. I was forced to go hypo before being allowed home so that I would know what it felt like.

I don't celebrate clocking up another year of diabetes I'm just relieved to still be around.
 
Was 9 years old in January 1983. I think mine started coming on around November 1982 and I began to get colder and colder as the winter went on. I think this was due to me losing so much weight and body fat. When I was admitted to hospital on Jan 17th I weighed 3 1/2 stone. I began to notice that I was getting thirsty all the time and just before diagnosis I was actually having baths and drinking the hot bath water because I was too weak to move to the tap and turn it on without a mammoth effort. I was also struggling to walk up stairs and was crawling up them just before I was admitted.

I remember being at school just before Christmas and we watched the film Bedknobs and Broomsticks as a treat before the holidays. There was a scene in it where the boy drinks a glass of milk and I just spent the whole film thinking about the milk and wanting to get out to get to a tap to drink more water. I became obsessed with my thirst.

My parents wanted to take me to the doctor before Christmas as I was complaining about feeling unwell but I was scared that they would find nothing wrong and I would get into trouble so convinced them I was fine.

The day of diagnosis is disturbingly clear considering it was 31 years ago. My dad was waiting for me outside of school on his bike which was unusual as I used to walk with my friends. He put me on the crossbar and cycled home and I went to the doctor. I remember the GP saying "My, you're a bag of bones" when he asked me to take my top off to look at me. I even remember my dad telling me I had to go to hospital and when I got home my mum had made chicken, mashed potato and baked beans for dinner which I didn't want as I had barely eaten for days at that point. I was actually excited about going to hospital as I had no idea what diabetes was.

My BS was 29.1 on admission and I clearly remember seeing the nurse for the first time holding a syringe and telling me she had to inject me. I though that it was something that you just had to have when you went to hospital. No one told me for about 3 days that I would have to do this every day.

I was in hospital for a week and on the 5th day I had a bit of a breakdown and lay in bed crying my eyes out because of all the emotion. I was off school for another week.

Writing this has actually brought a tear to my eye. Amazing how the memories still haunt me even after all this time.
 
When I was 24 weeks pregnant I went to the doctors for something completely different I was diagnosed as gestional diabetes e midwife said it would go away it didn't, the specialist kept an eye on me and my daughter she is fine but I was diagnosed with type 1 I was shocked to say the least because that's not what I went to the docs for it was all of a blur. Even though diagnosed properly as having type 1 nearly 3 months ago I still struggle to eat right and keep a routine of checking and I'm so rubbish wih the insulin even though I need it. The nurse says it takes time but it's hard I feel like I have lost control of what I can and can't eat every meal seems to be about numbers lol

Hiya

I was diagnosed with Type 1 at age 3 in 1972. I don't really remember much, apart from crying in hospital when the nurse removed the drip from my arm and the plaster hurt when she pulled it off. I don't celebrate the actual day, partly because I'm not really sure when it was (sometime in May I think), and partly because I'm too busy doing stuff. When I was a child, diabetes was always the reason I wasn't allowed to do something - can't have sweets, can't do certain sports. Now it's just something I have and I don't let it stop me doing what I want to do. Have entered a 50km bike ride in July - diabetes has taught me one thing - I like a challenge.
Last HbA1c was 5.9

Hoping to stabilise later this week, have stopped my usual exercise until I get back under control :)

May 8th 2014.

I had a fasting BG of 18.4 and keytones of 2.3 but felt absolutely fine apart from the extreme thirst and a little tired. So far I've had no hypos and really good BG control so I'm not complaining :) ...... Adamski has got me worried though! I thought I was luckily escaping the honeymoon. 3 hypos a day sounds rough! Are they mini hypos and are you still able to go to work? X

I was diagnosed on bonfire night 1996. My parents caught it pretty early on due to having a lot of type one diabetics in the family. My blood sugar was off the scale but my GP sent me home and basically told my parents they were wrong. They ignored his advice and took me to a&e. They kept me in for 2 weeks. At the time it was made out to be quite a fun thing for me, with the nurses making my injections seem like play time. (I was only 6) I know it sounds strange but I was happy and never let it get in my way. I was the last one diagnosed in my family so far. Hoping there won't be any more.

Only missed one day of work so far. Even with the hypos, I'm still fit and able to work. Thankfully back under control now, but having to run BG levels a little higher due to increased insulin sensitivity due to Honeymoon. Used to be on 1 unit of Novorapid per 10g of carbs, with tight control between 4-7mmol/l fasting BG. Now on 1 unit per 30g of carbs, which doesn't leave much room for error.

I've not had a "proper" hypo yet, just a good few instances of dropping below 4mmol/l and getting a bit shaky and hungry. Nothing that a quick drink of Lucozade won't fix :)

I'm currently using 1unit of humalog per 10g of carbs and it seems to be working for me :) do you know what the difference is?

How is exercise going for you? During my last netball match I went really shakey and had to take a quarter out, but when I checked my BG was absolutely fine at 6.6... Has anything similar like that happened to you? I've got netball tonight, and no spare players so im crossing my fingers it doesn't happen again!! x
