Need to lower my HbA1c quickly

A little advice needed. I am waiting to go into hospital for an operation. I had my pre-op assessment last week and today had a phone call from the hospital to discuss the results. My HbA1c is at 88 (10.2) which they say is too high and I will be susceptible to infections. As a result they will not operate until my levels go down.

I am type 2 and my blood sugars are constantly high. I am currently taking Metformin (500mg 4 tablets a day), Sitagliptin (100mg 1 tablet a day) and gliclazide (40mg 1 tablet a day).

What is the best way to lower my levels over a short period of time. Any help appreciated.

Ruler, that's exactly my situation. Coming on here and getting educated about changing to a low carb lifestyle has lowered my blood sugar levels in 2 weeks. It'll take about 12 weeks of low BG levels to make an impact on the HbA1c, so I won't be having my knee op any time soon.

I'm also trying to lose weight and get to grips with my type 2.

A low carb diet or a Newcastle diet.

However if your operation is for retinopathy or you suffer from retinopathy, do not attempt to lower your Hba1C rapidly. It can make the retinopathy worse.

Thanks for the replies. I have never really looked closely into a low carb diet. Any decent books on the subject with recipes etc?

BTW my operation is for a double hernia.

There is a Low Carb Diet Forum on this site, so that's a place you could start.

Try www.dietdoctor.com
Low carb high fat. Sounds ludicrous but pretty much immediate effect. Blogg written by Swedish doc specialising in obesity and diabetes.
Basically cut out sugar, pasta, rice, bread and potatoes.
Lots of veggies, meat, fish.
Limited fruit - preferably berries.
Unlimited eggs.
Cheese and nuts are fine.
Yoghurt full fat but plain.
Wine - 1-2 glasses a week.
No cereal.
Brekkie - fry up.
Lunch - tapas
Evening meal - steak and salad, chicken in cream sauce, lots of greens.
Would probably cut out the wine.
You must drink loads of water.
Good luck!

http://www.diabetes.co.uk/diet/newcastle-study-600-calorie-diet.html and http://www.ncl.ac.uk/magres/research/diabetes/reversal.htm will give you all the information you need on the Newcastle Diet.

Certainly, for me, the diet's working (2weeks in). My BG has gone down markedly but I'm not sure if it's quite the thing to try just before a major operation, when your body's going to be under a considerable strain, both during surgery and when you're recovering.

It's always strongly suggested people talk to their GP before attempting the diet - in your case, I think that's vital.
