There was a film called The Experiment where the only diabetic character died. It wasn't considered important to give him access to his medication.

I saw this film.. The plot line loosely based on a similar social study experiment..
Originally a German film. Then got remade in English...

Actually, when you look at the "Phantom menace" they blood tested Anakin Skywalker & misdiagnosed him as a "Jedi"...
& in my opinion Jar Jar Binks was pretty much having a hypo through the whole film too...!

Assuming it was a glucagon kit (was there any white powder?) that would have been a smart move if you can't test (if he's passed out from low blood sugar it will help, and if it's dka it won't do any harm) and it is not inconceivable that they might have noticed the kit and read the instructions

I found that episode actually. It goes like this: the guys is falling on the floor, another one catches him and says "he's diabetic, he needs insulin!" and a girl reaches to his pouch (which was earlier shown that it has syringes with insulin), draws air into the syringe and "injects" him. The guy is back to live right after that and he says that he didn't take his insulin on purpose, so she can take care of him (or whatever). Dumbest thing ever.

Newspapers are always particularly bad with how they portray diabetes. They always make out that it is a problem with diet etc. which is not the case for many people.
As a Type 1 I get quite a lot of opinions from people that it was my own fault and also get a lot of people saying "oh you can't eat that", when I'm on insulin and could eat it if I wanted to.
On the flip side I was bought a novel by Karin Slaughter to read when I was in hospital being diagnosed with Type 1, and by chance one of the characters also had Type 1. I'd never come across a character in a novel that was diabetic so it was strange to be given this book when I'm in hospital for that reason. I felt the portrayal in the story was quite good when it's compared to other forms of media/entertainment.

I think the biggest problem is that people are not aware that the severity of the disease can vary giganticaly. Some people need to alter their diet slightly and they're fine, where T1s need to inject themselves every day NOT TO DIE. That's quite a difference, that most people is not aware of - that's where all those stupid comments come from.
I'm trying to think of another disease with a severity this diverse, but I can't think of any...

Funny enough. I've managed to maintain the same weight effortlessly for the last 30 years...

You wouldn't die within a week without your insulin whereas a T1 diabetic would?
I had a think about this a little while back after a dream I had involving a nuclear war... Seriously. I had this dream where two atomic bombs went of in the distance & I survived.. In this post acocolypztic wasteland I carried a tenon saw in one had and a panel saw in the other..
In the actual dream I wasn't really thinking about the insulin... Probably because I woke with a hypo..

So I'm then thinking on the way up, how could I "blagg" it without insulin...?? I'm figuring I could survive longer than a week on chicken or dog with water...?? Even if it was radioactive....!

What about HIV/AIDS... ?

What about HIV/AIDS... ?
Ha! Like people with HIV virus can go their whole life without developing AIDS and any problems, or they can get a full-blown AIDS and suffer? That's actually a good example, thanks!
It's also kind of shocking enough that people may stop and think about it.

It's my understanding someone who is HIV can be prone to infection & can take longer to recover from. Providing it doesn't "complicate"?
