5.4 when got up. 1 hour later, after no food am 6.7. Damned dawn phenomenon!

5.8 today :)

@sanguine - I couldn't tell you whether you will see the same - it is a body thing and what happened to me may not happen to you. I have my fingers crossed for you though, but just don't take too long as it is hard to type like this :D

No I don't sorry bluetit but this is a quote from Professor Taylor's research

Thanks Andrew. You are a star.:)

In that hour do you have tea or coffee or anything?

If not, I might be inclined to try tea with milk. If it does include a drink, then a teaspoon of peanut butter (rather you than me at 7 am), or a teaspoonful of yoghurt.

Just to see if it stops the rise, or increases it.

In my earlier days, I went along quite happily then my scores notched down. It wasn't linear. I only started testing a couple of weeks after diagnosis, then not extensively for a short while, so don't have comprehensive data to quote to you.

Hi Andbreathe and thank you for your reply. I am all over the shop at the moment as morning levels are difficult for me and I'm trying to experiement with different things. The only consistent thing is my cup of lemon and ginger tea with a squeeze of lemon (today tried coconut oil in it too - did not work!) And thanks, I will give your suggestion a try, as it happens I used to always have a tea with milk. I am also going to try a spoonful of yoghurt to take with my vitamins and the nuts by the bedside challenge too!
I hate to admit it, but the one thing that really works is being super strict with carbs and alcohol. This can produce results between 3.7 and 4.9, which is where I like them. But every time I slip up a bit, along comes DP again!

How long have you been diagnosed Tweetypie? Apologies, I'm on my phone, can't really search any info out right now?

Hi guys, thought I would chip in.

I must say, regular testing is teaching me sooo much.

My dawn phenomenon mucks everything up. By the time I wake up my fasting BG has been long swamped by a deluge of liver dump :bored:

However, I've spotted a pattern of 5.3 emerging in my readings. It only appears in the following circumstances, but seems quite consistent:
  • When relaxed
  • At 3 or more hours after eating
  • No recent exercise
I'm wondering if it is my 'true' fasting BG.

If there's any stress, excitement, exercise in the equation, my liver steps in, and BG levels start to rise...

The irony is that I seem to have a conditioned response to hunger. When I get hungry, I get afraid (based on too many hypos induced by hunger), this makes me stressed, which makes my liver dump. At least, that is what I suspect is happening... Certainly, hunger leads to BG rises.

I'd be really interested to know to what extent stress ups our levels as I suffer from panic disorder and generaliized anxiety and I am sure that they both have had a considerable effect on my BS levels, both via upping my adrenalin levels and also comfort eating.

I reckon loads!

Stress is a killer!

I just wish that there was as much tickbox preventative medicine for mental health as physical health. My GP can't wait to get me on statins, or to the hypertension and diabetes clinics, as they probably earn him lots of points in some ridiculous government led scheme or other, but when it comes to my mental well - being, I've been referred to a support service with a well-being practitioner for a few 30 minute fortnightly sessions when a slot becomes available despite my scores on their assessment scale being at the top of end of the highest scale. It really p*sses me off as I can't be the only person in this boat and surely my stress is what is bumping up a lot of the things he can't wait to medicate me for. Arggh.

I totally relate and it's not fair.

Have you tried antidepressants? They could reduce stress a bit?

I've tried them in past and not found them very much help really. CBT did help but in our area, the system has changed so it is now delivered by all and sundry and not fully qualified therapists/psychiatric nurses. I definitely need to get on top of it sooner rather than later. Sorry you feel a bit in same boat. I think it's as big a problem as the so called diabetes epidemic but as it often needs more than just meds coupled with the mindset that we should just pull ourselves together, it gets pushed to the back of the funding queue time and again.

I don't doubt that stress is a significant negative influence on BG levels, and certainly blood pressure, and is likely a major impact on risk of heart disease. Have you tried meditation? I did TM many years ago and the basic technique still works well as a relaxant - a lot better than music with 'moods' in the title that's for sure. (My avatar has nothing to do with this by the way).

I am going to dig out a mindfulness course that junior did when he was stressed at school and look up some simple meditation techniques. I have to laugh at the mood music- I tried listening to some on youtube to relax and I was more agitated than when I started.
