Sooo I've just been for my review and the doctor said that I am most likely LADA. Given my BMI (25) and age (33) that its most likely the case im heading towards type 1 :(

She said given my BMI most of the other oral medications wouldbt really be that effective as they work on insulin resistance. However, theres a new one on the market that targets your kidbeys and instead of the extra glucose going back into your blood it comes out in your wee? Anyone heard of it?

She basically said because all the others would be ineffective that this is my last step before insulin. Feeling a bit disheartened at the mo as I honestly thought I could do this on my own x

Hi Jaxx, not heard of the new drug you describe but just wanted to say don't blame yourself. Diagnosis is often the hardest thing to get right. It's not that bad once you read up on things and there's always help here. Good luck, Mo
 
don't be disheartened, you goal is to control your BG and that is what you are doing. You don't need to make a decision immediately and a couple of days to get your head around it will help.

the new kidney drug stops the kidney reabsorbing the Blood glucose, it seems the kidney initially filters out the sugar and then puts it back in, so instead of putting it back, it sends it out as urine. it's new and that means problems could crop up down the road, but I would still seriously look at it vs insulin that's shown to be ok but subject to hypo. talk some more with your Dr and search the net on the drug.
depending how you feel, if you are heading to T1 you are going to be on insulin anyway. so at the end of the day it's not an either or
 
Yes!!! Thats the one squire. To ve honest though like Jack says if im heading towards Insulin anyway maybe I should just go striaght there rather than just prolong it for a year or so (if that) I am a bit wary as it is a new drug and like you say not too sure about the long term effects :( at least ill know the pros and cobs with insulin I guess...I dunno...My next HBA1C is in 3 weeks and she wants it under 48 :O but I dont think thats likely given that my last one on 9th May was 96 :O

no I'm trying to be neutral and balanced and give the whole story...and not influence your decision
I think the new drug will be brilliant...it's just a decision whether any perceived or real risks are taken into account. and I know nothing about it
but I wouldn't take it because I was scared of insulin. I would choose what I though was safe and effective
 
just checking, you are doing low carb aren't you? you can have low carb and not lose weight if you eat a bit more protein with enough fat

Yes Im low carbing now and still hardly getting below 10 :/ my next hba1c is only 3 weeks away, she didnt want to leave it any longer, dont worry about influencing my decision, I will be doing a LOT of research in the next few weeks x

nothing will drop off in 3 weeks, with your research, post what you find out about the drug, it may help others too
 
You may well be LADA, but your age and BMI could also indicate MODY, in which case oral meds could be effective without proceeding to insulin. Might be worth checking that they have thought of it.
 
See both my parents have type 2 diabetes but the thought of MODY terrifies me more now havung read it as it means my children are more at risk as they would be if I had type 2 :( the only reason I think it may be LADA not MODY is because the oral medications arent working?

You're probably right, if you found sulfonylureas didn't work. I'm just always on the lookout for fellow-MODY.:)
 
Aww well I say they arent working, they have to a certain extebt but would expect a better control with the maximum dose im on if that makes sense?? It is interesting that both parent have type 2 though. My children are only small (6&2) so plebty of time to instill healthy eating and taking good care of ourselves :) x

had some time to kill and was curious about Canagliflozin, I didn't get as far as the side effects because it said it reduces the A1c in the old scale by an av of 0.7% and 0.8% and you are about 11% going by your 96 score

In terms of what you'd expect using this drug, it's been studied in almost all combinations, and you can see all of this data in the package insert. It's been studied as monotherapy and in combination with metformin, sulfonylurea agents, thiazolidinediones, and an insulin. The reduction in A1c level varies among the studies, but it's between 0.5% and 1%, averaging around 0.7% and 0.8%. There's also an accompanying weight loss -- again, that varies. It's generally somewhere between 2% and 4.8% of the total body weight.
