I have just downloaded a pre- diabetics a cook book from here and says to cut down on butter and fat etc. I thought it was okay to eat fats. So what does this mean?
I think I'm getting my head round it then something contradicts it all. Heeeeelp.

Hi Lolliepop.
If you follow a Low Carb Diet, your body needs fat to use for daily operation, as it normally converts Carbohydrates to Sugar.
If you read up on the Low Carb/Diet sections you will find lots of info on the subject.
Many people on this site follow LFHC eating, as it helps control blood sugar and loose weight (With Exercise)if you need it)

Does it also have carbohydrates in the recipes?
As said above, if you cut down on the carbs you have to get the lost energy from somewhere, and the only places are from fats or protein, otherwise you would have no energy and get tired all the time. Too much protein can also be harmful to your kidneys, so we are left with good natural fats.

Its LCHF that helps in controlling sugars:)

I'm very surprised it says to cut down fat on here. It can't be just because I'm pre-diabetic I'm not taking any notice of it. Going to carry on with the LCHF diet. I'm going to read it again to see what else it says.

Personally I'd stick it in the bin with the cornflakes. Read diet 101 for example by Jenny Ruhl - she's diabetic and uses scientific references to prove what she says. :)

There is nothing wrong with natural dietary fat. You have been lied to, not to put too fine a point on it. Have a look at the videos I posted on Fat=Cholesterol=Heart Disease=Statin thread. If that tv programme doesn't convince ..

All the best in keeping control of your bg - big :)

I'm surprised this website is promoting a cookery book saying cut the fats. The problem is that most books and dieticians profer the low-fat mantra. As others have said cut the carbs and make up with veg, protein and enough fat to give you the calories you need.

I've ceased to be surprised by cookery books and recipes that call themselves "low carb" and tell you to use oats, wholemeal pasta and spelt flour, push puddings with nothing changed except xylotol substituted for sugar, and insist on low-fat dairy products and skinless chicken breasts. The word "smart" is always a warning flag, as it seems to be code for "low fat".

But I'm also surprised that such a misleading book should be sponsored by this site.
