Hi, I have been meaning to post this for ages but just keep forgetting! Basically a few years ago at a consultant's appointment I saw my consultant's colleague instead of her, I think I was about 17 at the time and yes I was a little overweight...still am, been trying to lose it but he said I could become a Type 2....is that true or possible???

Your type one aren't you....? If so..? You have no worries about becoming type 2...

Yeah have been Type 1 for 8 years...that's what I thought! I just was confused I know it has been years since I was told that but it still plays on my mind! Thanks :) x

I guessing you saw this doctor for something unrelated to diabetes. & that maybe the doc was singing from the health scare song sheet without looking at your files properly...? He may well have had a long day..

Nope it was my 6 month annual check up for my diabetes! In my hospital you don't always see the main consultant unless they feel you are a high risk if not you see one of her registrar's! I rarely see the same person each year! :/ x

Hi Nicola,

I think the Consultsant you saw did not explain what she meant.

There is such a thing as double diabetes
Obesity is the main risk factor for double diabetes. Patients with double diabetes are most often overweight. Doctors suspect double diabetes might be partly caused by type 1 diabetics who take insulin, but haven't made the other healthy lifestyle changes needed to help manage the disease. Because insulin use causes weight gain, if the type 1 diabetic patient doesn't take steps to eat healthy food and exercise regularly, weight gain could begin making his or her cells insulin-resistant.

Treating Double Diabetes

Treating a person with double diabetes is complicated because the preferred methods of treating type 1 and type 2 diabetes are different:

Perhaps he meant that if you are overweight as aT1 then you might develop insulin resistance and be both T1 & T2 in that sense (called double diabetes?). If you're not already low-carbing then do think about it as it will help you lose weight and hence avoid any insulin resistance (check the insulin amount along the way)

Oh I see I never knew that....well I haven't had any more comments like that. And I most certainly am not obese aha! I guess they just didn't explain that properly then thank you! x

I try and try but it makes me feel like sh*t so I give up, I have no patience which is a bad thing :(

@catherinecherub @Daibell wow you pick something new up every day on here.. Thanks. :)

I appreciated reduced insulin sensitivity to weight can cause issues, but had no idea there was a new super "double diabetes" risk...
I've had the T1 risks thrown at me since a lad.. There never seems to be an easy answer these days...:banghead:

I just begs the question who is paid how much to sit around & " think tank" these new names for conditions... My vote is ex Daily Mail journalists... Lol ;)

I don't think there is any affiliation with ex Daily Mai journalistsl and these researchers.

Compelling... Don't get me wrong I'm not disputing the research... Just mocking the "brand name" they come up with for the condition, which does somewhat hand another attention grabbing headline to the Mail on a plate...;)

I also foresee other stupid comments on the back of the "DD" tag, like "your dad was type2, maybe you will get the dreaded double diabetes"??

Not so stupid Nicola, I think the consultant was referring to Double Diabetes as Catherine has said.

It always worthwhile asking them to elaborate on anything your unsure of...
Even if you think you are.. Sometimes.. Lol

I know I do now lol like I said this was years ago!

Well, the Doc looks established as vindicated...
& we have both learned there is a "super D" that's likely to "put a strain on the NHS costing miwillionssss!!"

Like the new iPhone, I can't wait to see what else is in store....

Type one becoming type 2 as well. Sounds like a very high risk to me

Quite frankly.. I'm just laughing at this new found irony.... The amount of "discussions" I've had with "Dmoms" in defence of T2s in response to "my little Tarquin didn't ask for it" monologue... Looks like a new weapon in the T2 arsenal...! ;)
