Bygone days ....

And for those of you watching (snooker) in black and white, the blue is behind the pink.

Saturday afternoon at the Essoldo.
Hurrah boo hurrah boo .... and that was jut in the yo yo competition!

Coronation st was better in black and white ... that's how Salford was back then.

Even rainbows were in black and white up there ...

We lived in a terraced house in North London, and the "Dustmen" as they were called then, would walk through the house to the back yard to pick up the dustbins, which were metal in those days and carry them through to empty them into the back of the dust carts, then return them to our back yards. A bit smelly as I remember.

Am I dreaming ? Or was there the "pig swill" cart that came too, they collected food waste to go to feed the oinkers - nothing wasted in them days. We had chickens in our yard (and it was just a yard, my grandad imported some 'dirt' for the chickens to scratch about in, which meant fresh eggs always and a real chicken for Christmas.

No you were not dreaming, but then his round was taken up by the rag and bone man who lived in the Angel

Having BBC but not ITV. :D
Saturday morning 'pictures' (cinema? Did we call it the 'Flicks?'). So much chatter from us gangs of kids, no hope of watching the no-hope film anyway.
The Black and White Minstrels. Am I dreaming or did it really happen?

I vaguely remember going on a school trip stopping overnight and going to see the black and white minstrels possibly at the palladium ?

Saturday morning cinema ..... 1d bus ride to get there, 6d to get in, 2d for an ice cream, 1d to get home again. Long queues outside as we waited for the doors to open. It was in that queue that some spoil sport told me Father Christmas wasn't real. Community singing first with the words up on the screen (Yellow Rose of Texas springs to mind), a cartoon or two, a Laurel and Hardy, and a main film. Lenny the Lion and his man used to be the front of stage presenter. I was a member of his fan club and still have the badge! Glorious days.
