type 1 need to sort myself out :(

Please Princess start taking ownership of your diabetes, it is very worrying to hear you are not taking insulin, you have to get on top of your diabetes team and start shouting about this, the fact you are already having abcesses is a big concern, if they haven't already started supporting you then contact your local GP and discuss with them.

Sometimes the NHS isn't as supportive in some areas as others but unless you really push hard you will not get the support you need, the rest is up to you, but the 2 books as quoted by Noblehead really are the best ones so get them on Amazon if you haven't already.

Have you started taking any insulin yet ?

As Spiker said "Think like a pancreas" is the best book ever. It describes everything in everyday language and gives actual solutions. The author is type 1 as well, so his approach is real-life.
If you have been told to just take 10 units and kept going low then that was probably the main cause of the weight gain. Ask your new doctors about a carb-counting course, so you can adjust your insulin to what you eat. There is a happy balance that can be achieved! We're all here to support you as well, you can see how many members were concerned! So don't feel alone!

Let us know how your doctor's visit goes. Ask to see a consultant and a specialist nurse asap so they can sort out proper insulin and doses for you!

As others have said, Think Like a Pancreas is a great book.

Does anyone else struggle with their diabetes?

You are losing weight because you are eating yourself through lack of insulin. This is NOT good. I'm surprised you feel well at all not taking it.
I know why you mean about weight gain as I had a big weight gain in a short time when I was diagnosed. Once your doses are set right you shouldn't gain weight anymore. Tbh, I think I would prefer to be a little heavier and functioning than thin and feel like I'm dying everyday.

Good luck with the GP visit. Hopefully, the GP should be able to refer you to see a hospital consulant or at least see a surgery based DSN that has some knowledge of bolus/basal insulin and using ratios..

Although there is a mention of DAFNE course, unfortunately in some areas, DAFNE courses are only held every 6 months and have a very long waiting list. What do you do while you wait for a course to become available???? Well,dont suffer in silence, You can read Think Like A Pancreas or go to the website BDEC http://www.bdec-e-learning.com/welcome.asp
Join it and then be prepared to test your bg levels before breakfast, mid mornning, before lunch, mid afternoon,, before eve meal, before going to bed (6 times per day). Write down the bg results, how much carb was eaten, how much insulin was injected and then see what effect the insulin and the carb had on the bg results. For best results using bolus/basal..... use a ratio. Its far better than using set amounts of insulin. Most start with 1u for 10g carb but then start to adjust the ratio to get the right target bg levels. A good starting bg level will be 6-7mmol before eating, and then by adjusting the ratio,get to 8-9.5mmol mid way (2.5hrs after eating) and then back to so the ideal bg level is usually 2-3mmol higher than the before eating bg level. There are a few websites that explain carb counting and ratios online.
This one is good http://www.diabeticfriend.co.uk/carb-counting/ Also to calculate a correction dose look at the 100 rule. As you dont know yet what your exact Total daily insulin really is, work on 1u will lower bg by 2mmol so if yr bg is 14mmol and your target bg is 7mmol then by substracting 14-7 will equal 7 so if your correction factor is 1u for 2mmol, 7 divided by 2 will equal 3.5u so this will be your oorrection dose using targets. I never went on a DAFNE course myself but figured out carb counting using ratios by looking at BDEC., the 500 and the 100 rule It didn't take me too long to get to grips with it all but definately bg testing is a must do and writing everything down is another must do as well.

Been to docs and now currently at the hospital waiting on results of blood tests! It appears I may have been misdiagnosed and I could actually be type 2 and not type 1!
 
Great news now confirmed type 2 Ive been taken off insulin and been put in two different types of tablets docs rung me to say he's been in touch with the diabeties nurses and they will be in contact with me sion, back at docs next week to see how I'm getting on with my tablets onwards and upwards for me now :)
 
Phew - glad you've got sorted, was quite worried about you, had visions of you losing loads of weight, getting very ill with DKA and not getting any support.

Thank goodness the NHS have got on top of this and you are ok - take good care and let's hope the abscesses disappear now.

that is good news, but do you realise the bad news yet? no more whacking yourself with insulin for 2 big pieces of chocolate cake, T2 is diet controlled first, drugs second
