Hi i am on pump and just love eating chicken and fish , but i am not able to decide how to give the bolus either it goes too low landing me into a hypo or too high ..
I have options like square wave bolus ( sends insulin over some hours) but i am not able to use it to its potential
how do you guys go about taking insulin for non veg ??

your referring to taking insulin for protein?

I personally don't do this on the pump as I have never needed too, but would consider it if it was required.....

there are quite a few folk on here who do it and I think they take a bolus for half the grams of protein but couldn't be sure exactly..........

I would also imagine a square wave bolus function could come in handy also as the process of converting proteins and fats is slower than it is for carbohydrates and so the normal activity of the quick acting analogue insulin may be too quick.......

what kind of rise have you observed and with what amounts of proteins.........?

I have seen highs like 300
I ate about 30g of chicken and gave its bolus after 2 hrs !

I am only familiar with mmol/l unit of measurement...........:(....

at that high of 300, were you on target before eating the chicken........?

so that's about 7.7mmol up to 16.6, provided my conversion is correct from mg/DL to mmol/l....

that's a significant rise for just protein..........

I would be asking questions like:

is my basal OK?

was there any residual carbs working?

I'm not a pump user but do see a bg rise after eating meals high in protein and fat without any visible carbs on the plate, all I would suggest is you use an extended blous to counteract the slow rise in bg levels, for someone like myself on MDI I have to split-dose my insulin. Maybe Novorapidboi can suggest how you do this as I haven't the foggiest.

If my conversion was accurate, would you see an increase in BG of the magnitude shown when eating protein.........?

the square wave bolus function on the leading pumps out there is simple enough, provided you are on target before the meal, at least with medtronic anyway as if your high, it would want you to get insulin in straight away to bring you back, which then turns the dose in to a dual wave bolus......

@sonaarora , I assume you know how these functions are carried out..............;)

Good explanation Novo:)

As for your question, I would more than likely see a rise like that if I didn't bolus, but if I just injected a small amount of QA before the meal and then didn't inject again postprandial then Yes I'd see a bg rise into double figures, maybe not as high as the OP but much would depend on the portion sizes in the meal.

wow, this is a suprise for me, I suppose just like everything, some peoples bodies will convert their protein at different rates.......

I don't observe this, or so I believe........

I would like to see how many people have a similar effect from protein...........

time for a POLL maybe..........;)

So let me try a extended bolus(square wave ) for chicken for 4 hrs !! And I'll take the insulin for the carbs normally

Some do some don't, those type 1's who are on a very low-carb diet can still be injecting up to 6 units of insulin to cover their LC meals, I believe Bernstein calls this the Chinese Restaurant Effect.......... although I'm sure there's other factors at play as the Joslin Study recently found.
