I like crisps! Is this bad for my health?

You sound like my late mother :)

I should say I'm a type 1 so can eat things in moderation, I don't have a sweet tooth (whether something has 4g of carbs or 40g) but do enjoy a savoury treat such as a packet of crisps.

As usual a small but vocal group of individuals are ridiculing everyone who dares to eat carbs, I eat crisps occasionally with my lunch which is usually a wholegrain sandwich.

My preference is plain crisps although I also like some of the posh hand cooked crisps which are available now like sea salt and crushed black pepper and sea salt and balsamic vinegar.

Some member really need to appreciate that not everyone wants to eat a low carb high fat diet, I certainly dont and thought that Dr H's answer was spot on.

If you can eat a packet of crisps and your bg levels are OK then I see nothing wrong with it, although I didnt eat crisps when I was losing weight as the fat content is very high which means a lot of calories.
 
@Sid Bonkers But he said that the fat and the salt were the culprits! Surely for a diabetic the carbs are the main thing to watch? He gave the impression that we only had to cut out sugar. He also said 'as long as your blood sugars are usually well controlled', but didn't tell us if that means a fasting reading of 4.9 or maybe7.1 ! It's very bland at best

Maybe Dr Hilary doesn't believe in a high fat diet. You can find lots of places where he mentions reducing sat fat
Here's a typical answer of his about lowering cholesterol
'The answer is simple – by eating a diet lower in saturated fat, you can lower your cholesterol level. So, avoid red meat, especially the fattier types, anything fried and full-fat dairy products, too. Eat plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables, cut back on other carbohydrates like pasta and potatoes and opt for grilled fish, rice and a Mediterranean style diet instead. In other places he seems to advocate a higher protein rather than higher fat diet (he does that in the video that Andy resurrected yesterday where he's stressing protein and 'normal' amounts of fat)

As for crisps they're a long way from fruit and veg, have many more calories from fat than carbs. They are high salt ( though not as high as a few years ago)
A 25g bag (Walker's)
51.48 cal from carbohydrates ( 12,87 g carb)
71.78 cal from fat (7.975 g fat)
and .35g of salt.
You'd certainly get more nutrients from a small piece of fruit ( of course less of the fat and fewer calories.) Surprisingly though they have actually have quite a bit of vitamin C, some vit B6 and some minerals . They aren't a good basis for a diet but they aren't as bad as some other things, if someone can fit them into their plan in small amounts or on an occasional basis, then why not?

I think the biggest problem is palatability they are deliberately designed by the manufacturers to be 'moresome' .There is no doubt that some people eat too many especially if they eat them directly from a large packet.
I think it would have been a good idea to include something in his answer about this and advice such as weighing out a portion in advance , and eating as part of a meal rather than a snack.
 
I suspect he might get thrown off Rosemary Conley's payroll if he went around saying that fats were good.
 
@phoenix I found that when I increased all natural fats my cholesterol got lower. I have always put this down to the low carb element of my diet rather than the change in fats. I always struggle when I see answers that are contrary to what I know to be true for me. Can you think of any explanation for this? Maybe there are other variables I haven't taken into account? This is a genuine question, not me being argumentative. And don't take a lot of time looking into it, I just wondered if you knew the answer?

I totally agree with your last paragraph re the problem with crisps, they are also designed to make us want to have fizzy drinks afterwards.

Did you think his reply regarding statins was spot on too ? Absolute farce and opportunity wasted.
 
Crisps my favourite . I love pom bears. They are only in small packs so can't over eat and they are gluten free. They only have 95 kals a pack and are baked (i think!!)

I tend to go for the baked ones now as well, for preference.
