I am posting this thread to see the opinions and have some practical advice on whether a medication can be skipped to match the blood sugar test result received in a given time. I had the blood sugar level before lunch 4.6 . Whether it would be a correct approach to skip the Metformin 500 ,that was due after lunch to match with the sugar level before lunch ?

@Kaha
I do not think you would be wise to skip you metformin dose in response to one good reading.

It is common for insulin dependent diabetics to adjust their dose in accordance with their expected carb intake and pre meal glucose levels. Metformin is not insulin though and does not work in the same direct way.

My understanding is that you need to build up a certain background level of metformin before it becomes effective in reducing insulin resistance/glucose production. For this reason, it takes a while to kick in when we first go on it, but also why missing one dose should not have much effect on your glucose levels.

Before you make any changes to your medication regime, you really should get the consent of your doctor.

Thanks Pavlosn. Sounds reasonable. I was just afraid that additional medication Metformin after lunch might bring my level further down .

I think Pavlos is correct, skipping one or two doses of Metformin will have little or no effect on bg levels in the short term.

However if you are regularly getting pre meal readings in the 4's you might want to have a talk with your doctor/diabetes nurse as it may be that you no longer need the level of medication that you are currently taking.

Thanks Sid , i do not have remeal readings in 4`s, but usually close to 6 .the reason I got is I started a new addition of medication in the morning ,may be why it was 4.6

Kaha any future changes possibly needed with your medication .
Best to discuss your concerns on this with your GP or DSN .

Taking along a list of your recent BG levels too would be good
to show your GP or DSN .

as anna said, see or ring your Dr/nurse. he may reduce the dose of the second morning drug and leave the metformin where it is, did he say what target BG he wanted?

Dear forum members , Thanks for your comments.
Anna /Jack : I started just yesterday additional medication DiaMicron 30 mg in the morning as advised by the doctor who wanted my HbA1C to be brought down to bellow 7.0% . Currently , without this additional dose I had been running in the range of 7.2-7,4% range of HbA1c for last 6 months or more. My usual doses are 50/1000 Janumet ( combination of Januvia and Metformin) two times in the morning and at night plus 500 mg Metformin after lunch . The DiaMicron is added to all these.
appreciate if any one in the forum could advise . In fact before starting the new medication yesterday, i managed to control diet and do regular walking and brought my average 7day/14 day and monthly average to 7.1 . I thought still this is not the best result ,so stared the extra medicine just yesterday and from the very first result after taking DiaMicron my pre lunch sugar level dropped down to 3 month`s lowest number 4.6 . That is why I thought whether to skip afternoon Metformin or not.
I am sure amongst forum members there might be experienced diabetic practitioners/ med professionals or veteran patients who could advise /share their experience with me. I am currently far away from my GP and can not meet him to discuss all my concerns.
