Hi I have recently been diagnosed as having prediabetes, told to lose weight and watch what I eat. I need help! Do I need to see a dietician? Do I need to be testing my blood? What exactly does "you're glucose levels are 43" mean. Feel a bit out of my depth with it all. Any advice will be greatfuly excepted.

Hi. A meter would be useful but not essential at this stage. I personally wouldn't recommend a dietician as some are truly awful and it's a lottery. There is plenty of info on this forum so do look around. Basically you need to control the carbs and portion sizes and use protein and fat to make up your overall diet. So, think carbs not calories, and not just sugar. Read all the labels on the shelves and beware 'low-fat' products which may be stuffed full of carbs. The 43 level would be your HBa1c test which measures your last 3 months average blood sugar. A figure of 43 is very good so you are at an early stage where weight loss should be all you need for many years

you need to start by doing some sort of exercise aswell as eating a low carb diet. you might want to cut out any sugary snacks that you eat as this will affect your blood levels. you dont really need to check your blood unless the doctor has asked you too as it sounds like its going to be type 2 diabetes diet controlled. you need to keep your pancreas as healthy as possible so you dont want to overload it with sugar.

Hi, I was diagnosed with prediabetes just over a month ago.

I am absolutely NO expert, but if I can offer any advice, I will.

My reading was 44.

I found a meter essential.
I ws diagnosed diabetic, and used my meter to decide what foods spiked me, and which ones didn't. I didn't go HF, I just cut out all the carbs that spiked me, and found I was ok with others.
So I settled on lowGI/GL, portion controlled, lost over 4 stones, and got my BG back into the normal range.
Exercise also made a lot of difference to me.

I'm also just trying the Newcastle diet, to finish off the last stone, and see what happens to my BG.
