Ok, reading through the various posts on here seem to indicate testing yourself with a meter is the way to go?

I have T2 & been informed that I need not test as they would monitor it for me. How can I know if I change my diet, how it affects my levels. My tests are 6 months apart that seems a long time to be possibly getting it wrong.

Discuss please

All diabetics should have a bg meter and have test strips on prescription, for the very points that you've made above Steve.

Hiya. Yes, my HbA1c tests are a year apart and estimate an average blood glucose level for the previous three months, so threequarters of the time my levels are a mystery. So the forum recommends self testing. I use a Codefree meter because the test strips aren't too expensive. I test on waking, immediately before meals and two hours after the first bite. That builds up a picture of what spikes my BG.

Hi Steve, I'm I think sort of border line, 22 September 2014 when I was diagnosed testing was not mentioned & I did not think of it either. It was only that I was so devastated to learn the news that I started looking for information and found this site & forum. It took me a till about the 24 October to decide that I needed to test and it is the best thing I have done. I'm testing before and after all meals and one at bedtime, the one before breakfast is my fasting. I have seen a general decline in all levels since LC & Moderate Fat and it paints a picture just how you are getting on. Tells you exactly when a particular 'High or moderately High Carb' affects you, as it will not affect everybody the same and always have in mind the portion size of of any carb food.

I would say don't hesitate, just go for it.....Testing I wish I had started sooner.

Ok, this makes sense to me, however they don't seem keen on me testing myself. Can I purchase a meter & test strips without a prescription?

I got my meter from the nurse at the nurse at my surgery. They can also give you prescription for the strips too. It is worth asking in the first instance.
