Hello :)

Hi and welcome. You have had a lot of good advice except from the DN who gave you very bad advice on foods. Yes, keep the carbs as low as you can. Fats, protein and veg can be used to make up the diet but obviously you need to interpret that. If Metformin is giving you problems then ensure it is the Slow Release (SR) version as this is much kinder. If you are overweight then you should find the right low-carb diet helps and the Gliclazide may not be needed but wait and see and discuss with the DN. BTW the max dose of Glic is 320mg which I was on.

Hi Rosie23
I don't do posh weighing ...I have just reduced my carbs ...not always low carb , but more medium or rather reduced for me .or GL foods, .personal, choice ...
I know which bread roll is best for me at lunch with my soup always homemade ...never had toast for breakfast so that has not been a problem ..
If I have a jacket potatoe it is half of one or a very small one ...
Rice a very small portion , only about once a weak ...
I have been more concerned about sugar in my diet ....so treats have been rare ...
Biscuits I never ate , but now I do need a biscuit if my feelings are low ...strange that ..
But I am two years this month into learning how to cope ...and four stones lighter , since finding that sugar was poisoning me , I focused more on the sugar first ..carb reduction was something I am and still am getting to grips with ...on going I think ...
My veggie diet has not had to change much ...example ..if I make a quorn cottage pie I might do a sweet potatoe mash with swede or carrots ...depends ...it really has been about tweaking for me and exercise ...

I love reading about everyone's diet because I can always learn something new ...or pick up a tip that I might like to use ...
Like the use of different flours in baking for example ...and the 9 bars you will read about ..along with a lot more reading , not just here on this site but everywhere ...

High fat now that is where I don't fit the mould , I do low fat for my own reasons ...this does not mean I never have any cream
Cheese I go,for the lighter versions ....again personal choice ...

Enough for now , we will all share our experiences and suggestions with you ...let us know how you get on...

Best wishes ..Kat ...

Hi Daibell

I did ask the DN to increase the gliclazide dose to 320 mg but she insists the max daily dose is 160 mg! I've even tried to get a referral to a diabetes clinic at the local hospital but my surgury say they no longer do referrals anymore. Everything is dealt with at surgery, it's such a shame that the DN isn't up to date with her diabetes knowledge though! That's why Im so pleased I found this valuable and helpful site.

Congrats on losing 4 stones :) Well done Kat
You seem to have found a good balance of what you can and can't have to keep you healthy... I'm going to use many of your tips... Thank you

Up until recently I was able to eat a small/ med jacket potato and was ok but I had one last week and sugars went up to 13!! And I felt unwell.
I feel that carbs are just poisoning me now and it's time to make changes.
I've been reading different threads since yesterday and the majority of people are saying the same message .... Reduce carbs... So thats definitely the way forward. The last 24 hours has been a total eye opener ....

HI @rosie24
Thsnk you for your reply , the weight loss yes I am nearly back to being me again ...it was the sugar the hidden sugar and the bottles of lucozade which increased my weight , I was very very thirsty ...thought it was thyroid...that is why I have always been more focused on the sugars ...
Yes I have tweaked my diet , but only from learning what is right for me ....I am more potion controlled as well ...
I am not a true low carber though as I explained , but reduced yes, so many more people here can share their low carb and other diets with you ...
All of us are different though ,,made harder that we all react differently to things , and have other health needs as well...
Lots of info here on this site , you will meet lots of people....
Recepies give nice ideas as well .....
I am a believer in balance , but that is just me ....
Some people regarding potatoes , eat a couple of small roast ones ...and that is ok for them ....I think @bluetit does ...
Enjoy all your changes , keep well and keep in touch with us ...you have experiences to share with us , I am, still a learner ...
Take care , best wishes Kat

the bottles of lucozade?
why were you drinking them?

Hi Rose, I bought the new book, " Reverse Your Diabetes" by Dr David Cavan 2 weeks ago. It's absolutely full of great advice for diabetics. He recommends a low carb diet!

Thank you for the recommendation daddys1 and robin47, I'll have a look into it.

I've recently bought 2 books .... The Vegetarian Low Carb Cookbook by Rose Elliot & The End of Diabetes by Dr Joel Fuhrman.
