Woke up this morning and my fasting BG was 11.00, after breakfast 2 hr post i checked levels and it was 9.7, had lunch 2 hr post level was at 9.2, as day has gone on I have began to feel unwell and sickly, took my BG level and it was 6.0, had some dinner and still not feeling much better :(

Sorry your are felling unwell.

Can you describe what you mean by feeling unwell. What symptoms are you experiencing ?

You are levels are not particularly low so you should not feel hypo but if you are used to much higher numbers then you can experience false hypo - hypo like symptoms at glucose levels above the 4 mmol threshold for true hypos.

Thanks for the reply, I think it may have been a false hypo as my levels are usually around the 10 mark, and yesterday i started taking 1000mg metformin daily, I felt sick, dizzy and tired and generally unwell

When first going on metformin many people suffer from nausea and stomach upsets but that does not sound like what you are describing.

Did you go immediately on 1000mg?
Usually people are started on 500mg and then asked to increase dose by 500mg per week until they reach the prescribed maximum dose.

You have not noticed your breathing being faster have you?

I had been taking 500mg metformin for one week then yesterday increased by 500mg to take 1000mg daily, not had any problems after first couple of days of taking metformin initially, not sure about my breathing, it may have been faster because i thought i was gonna either pass out or be sick.

Hello, the feeling of wanting to pass out is awful , so are the other problems ....
I have just started slow release , agsin very strange symptoms ...it takes about 3 months I understand with any changes..
Or your body may not like the drug ....might be worth a chat with gp ....or wait a while longer , but I believe in getting things checked out ....
You are right to have increased your dosage slowly but powerful drugs all the same ...hope you feel, better soon ....kat

When I first started on Metformin,my worst time was about 4pm ,I thought my BS was to low.
I got a meter and found it was about 5 at that time of day so that wasnt the problem.the thing is before I started testing and being on the diet it may have been higher and mabe my body had got used to higher levels, and when it dropped it affected me,

Hiya, I know when I first started to eat low carb and my bs levels started to lower, I used to feel really unwell. I think I used to suffer from false hypos, but as my body got used to being at the lower levels the feelings have gone. If you are still feeling unwell tomorrow I would call the surgery and either speak to the nurse or doctor just to be sure.
Take care and let us know how you get on

hi,

I have just been diagnosed with type 2 , and are currently taking 2000mg of metoformin a day , it made me so sick in the first 24hrs , but I spread the dose over the day , so this this is much better.....

Hi I can't help much with the feeling of being unwell but your blood suagr after 2 hours is a bit on the high side which metformin won't help with much. Can I ask whether you are over or normal weight and what age you are. If overweight are you following a low-carb diet?

I was on the maximum dose of Metformin for a long time and to be blunt it made me very unwell with symptoms similar to yours and now inject insulin and feel a lot better. Hope you get better and report your symptoms to your GP, keep the faith :)

I am now on 2000mg of Metformin SR. It took me about 4 months to really get used to it. I felt sick for months, and more so each time I increased the dosage. It's awful but hopefully it will pass for you, too. When I went from 1500 to 2000, I waited 2 weeks instead of one to up the dosage. I'm not your GP, but for me, I thought I didn't *have* to increase it every week, and just waited until I felt a little better to increase it.

Well as the week has gone on I've felt worse, lack of appetite, tiredness, frequent toilet trips :( and feeling sick, so I rang the doctors and explained my symptoms to the receptionist, who passed them on to the doctor, He has now put me on Glucient SR 500mg metformin hydrochloride. After picking the new prescription up I just says take one daily with food & increase as suggested. I didnt see or speak to the doctor, so I asked the pharmacist, who told me to take one tablet at dinner time today, 2 tablets at dinner time tomorrow and 3 tablets the next day at dinner time, and to keep taking 3 tablets at dinner time thereafter. Anybody else on these SR tablets and is this how you take them?

Fiona, this sounds like high BS levels to me. Have you sorted out a suitable eating plan for yourself yet? What sort of meals do you normally eat? If you tell us, maybe we can offer some help. Metformin alone won't lower those levels. Diet is the key.

Ive been trying to adapt my eating according to my monitor. Went to bed last night level was 5.9 (good for me) got up 7.0, had a very small portion of porridge level went up to 9.7, had cheese and tomatoe sandwich on Soya & Linseed bread, and for dinner had rump steak with mushrooms and tomatoe. I snack on nuts and cheese, but just not felt like eating, with feeling sickly. I have been reading up on the Low Carb High Fat, cut out potatoes altogether, and have sweet potatoes, vegetables etc

You look to be getting there with an eating plan, but if you are eating to your meter, why are you still eating porridge? A very small portion spiked you by 2.7mmol/l which is too much. You need to aim for under 2mmol/l, ideally about 1mmol/l at 2 hours.

Have you tested a sandwich on your bread? Most of us find we can perhaps manage one slice, but not two slices.

Potatoes - jackets and mash should be avoided, but you may wish to experiment with one or two small new or roasted ones, using your meter. Sweet potato is a bit better, but could still spike you. Your meter will tell you.

I hope you feel better soon. You sound so miserable.

I usually have nutty muesili with milled linseed, with sesame, blueberries and raspberries, but just fancied something warm this morning. Only generally have one slice of soya & linseed and im ok with that

Fionamarie, good that your sugars are down. Keep carbs to a sensible limit but I suspect that the Metformin is causing side effects. I couldn't tolerate high doses of Metformin and was taken off it.
