Small unscientific test on my non-diabetic hubby

Hubby's normal fasting levels are low 4's. He is not diabetic.

Last evening
Half an hour after dinner. He had a lot more carbs than I did, including a pudding
Me - 7.8
Hubby 8.9

2 hours after dinner. He was half way through a bottle of Real Ale
Me - 6.5
Hubby - 13.1

It just shows what beer can do!

Think of the binge drinkers at the weekends their BG levels must be off the scale after all alcohol is amost pure sugar

I would say his levels were pretty normal considering what he ate and drank after all non diabetics don't have low BG levels all of the time

Fascinating.

I too have a captive lab rat husband.

A while back he pigged out (and I'm using the term advisedly!) on something like 300g of mini cheddars and 200g rum raisin fudge.

I got him at 7.4 at 1 hour, and below 6 at 2 hours.
He refused to test at 3 hours (too busy snaffling toast, if I remember correctly)

Yet, and this is crucial he feels much better, and gently loses the carb cravings and some weight, when he joins me low carbing.
I do not believe that 'normal' blood glucose automatically precludes carb intolerance.

I really didn't mean for any of these suggestions to materialise! I wasn't really asking if anyone thought he may be diabetic, I was just pointing out that non diabetics have high levels after carbs and more particularly, beer. However, it is all very interesting.

He had his routine over 60's health check on Friday including bloods. It is possible an HbA1c will have been thrown in as they took 3 phials full - lipids and liver & kidneys, and normally glucose but it wasn't fasting and may well have been an A1c as our GP likes to throw one in the mix whenever other bloods are being taken. We shall see what we shall see. Thanks all ....

I hope an HbA1c is part of his doctor's routine over 60s health check. It should be for everyone.

I have tested Mrs Nuthead a few times after a facefull of carbohydrates and never got a reading over 5.8. Nice to know but mildly annoying. all the same..:sorry:

My wife and my kids have high readings at times, so I would also guess many non diabetics do.

In fact, just for fun, I tested her, twice. (second time mainly as I didn't believe the first reading, the first one really was for fun)

She's not T2, no history in the family, no symptoms, no excess weight, in fact, she's just not T2.
Not even prediabetic.

11.7,
so I retested.
12.4

Her diet today

Breakfast nothing

5 cups of coffee throughout the morning, with 2 spoons of sugary coffee mate each time.

Lunch, Prawn sandwich , (brown) multi pack of cheddars.

Dinner, baked potato, cheese, butter, carrots, kale, peas, pre packed hunters BBQ chicken

Glass of red wine. (part fermented 7%, so still fairly sugary)

It'll be down shortly i would assume, but she's not the only person I've tested with results like this.

Yes, sprinkling it on! We eat our Yorkshires after our meal as a dessert, with butter and sugar. Or at least, I used to and he still does!
Never heard that before! Is that a Lancashire thing?

Well it is actually called a Yorkshire pudding!:p:p

My family's from Lancashire and we normally ate ours with the meat course, but I have tried and enjoyed the sweet version too. I believe its not an uncommon practice.

No it isn't. As I said in my earlier post alcohol is derived from carbs (sugar) but most of what is left is alcohol and not sugar. Alcohol doesn't raise BS but it does have calories.

Lol Bluetit, that sounds like a puffed up pancake ;) :hungry: good luck with your experiment on hubby .

RRB :)

There are 17g carbs in a pint of 4% beer, 8g carbs in a pint of 4% lager, 9g carbs in 4% stout. (Carbs & Cals)

Interesting. If I ate like that my blood sugar would not go higher than 10. Perhaps I'm not diabetic after all.
