Tired all the time with no sleep :(

Does any one feel tired all the time and not sleep? Can't remember when I actually had some sleep seem to be running on empty have a stressful job so not quite sure how I manage to get through my days...anyone have any advice to help me sleep?
 
You need to deal with the stress and take serious steps to relax and unwind before bedtime. What is probably happening is that your sympathetic nervous system is remaining "switched on" at night so you can't sleep. Think of it like a car engine revving away whilst the handbrake is on. Eventually it can lead to adrenal exhaustion, so that's why I'm suggesting serious steps to reduce stress - not trying to frighten you, just to say look into proper relaxation techniques.

I sympathize with your situation , I suffered from chronic insomnia for years particularly in the winter months and during the worst episodes it was impossible to control my BS. This is the first winter in many years I haven't had severe insomnia bouts. I was prescribed anti depressants and this really helped , I also take st.john's wort occasionally. Daily exercise , even in the cold weather , knocks me out and I can now sleep from 10:00 to 06:00 uninterrupted pure heaven.

I tried everything whilst attempting to beat it , sleep masks, vibrating pulse machines , sleeping tablets, melotonin all to no avail. Switching off before bed really helps , I read for ~1 hour until I can't keep my eyes open.
 
Also possibly ask your GP about checking your thyroid function levels .
Hyperthyroidism can keep you extra busy/alert and over active .
 
Just out of interest - do you use an ipad/computer before bedtime ? The light from the screen fools the brain into staying awake, it's good to turn this off about an hour or so before bedtime to ensure you get quality sleep, also try some meditation so get a CD to help you relax, and try to tackle whatever is causing you stress - otherwise you aren't confronting the issue, if you know what I mean ;)

Having a stressful job won't help matters if your unable to switch off at night, perhaps you should see your Dr and ask for their help if your unable to change your job.
 
I suffer from this on and off. I once didn't get more than two hours sleep a night for several months due a combination of diabetes, bereavement, work stress, anxiety ,surgery complications etc.

1. Keeping bedroom only for sleep and other such activities.
2, No laptops, kindles, ipads, phones, televisions, SAD boxes, lamps on before bed.
3. Hot bath before bed.
4. Exercise before bed, I'd run for an hour before I went to bed and would sleep much more deeply.
5. Controlled BS, make sure you're not waking up due to hypos or BS fluctuations.
6. If you're really struggling, in the short term sleeping tablets like zopiclone from your GP. You'll sleep like a baby, but addictive so no more than a week or two.
7. I read up on stress management and adapted my behaviours and thoughts around what I construed as stressful, we can often choose what we allow to stress us or not, it takes focus and practice though.

I got to thinking that all stress was bringing me was poor health, poor sleep and a poor home life, so I stopped allowing things to stress me out, or I minimised the potential negative impact of things and dealt with things before they become stressors.

If something was stressing me, could I change it in a proactive/positive way? Yes, change it. If not, what's the point in worrying about it if it can't be changed kind of thing, ruminating and being stuck in your own head rarely helps.

Still suffer with it now and then, but it's much better.

Thanks for the comments guys I think it's a combination of different things as to why I'm not sleeping...I've recently become a manager and I work 50 hours a week, I've had everything checked and all clear from docs, but they won't prescribe me sleeping tablets not even for short term :(

You're right there: a combination of things will help you, but don't go down the (prescribed or otherwise - ) drugs route or alcohol; they only fix things in the short-term, yet soon become a long-term dependency.

I agree with all the previous postings, including laptop/ipad early sign offs, etc. If you use your mobile as your alarm clock, then buy a cheap clock and use that instead and turn your phone off / silent at night and leave it in another room.

You can also try a bit of simple meditation as well as dietary changes, such as no caffiene past 5pm, drinking camomile tea, etc. to help cleanse and relax your whole body.
